Looking for a short scale bass

I'm thinking about getting a short scale bass. Not looking to spend a ton of money, just something to tinker around at home and record with. A few months ago I played the Ibanez Mikro bass, which has a 28.75" scale (I think). I'm short of torn between getting one, because it is much smaller than your typical short scale bass of 30" amd the guitar itself felt really small to me. I've also looked at the Rondo SX basses, but I won't be able to try one out in person, so I'd need advice from anyone here that has one. Any other suggestions for short scale basses? Thanks guys!

Re: Looking for a short scale bass

My son has a short-scale SX 60's Jazz Bass and it's great. I think it's the perfect bass for kids to learn on, or their guitarist Dads to fool around with.

How did you reach that conclusion

Re: Looking for a short scale bass

Look hard for an old Mexican Fender Stu Hamm Urge Bass. My brother got one years ago for 300 bucks on the bay and it is AWESOME. Shorter scale, and even the stock electronics are ok! I really dig his!

Re: Looking for a short scale bass

Those older Stu Hamm bases are 32 inchs the new ones are 34. Fender is selling a shorty bass again, the reissue of the Mustang Bass (which is pretty cool!)

On a budget there is the Squier Bronco Bass, which is alright but like any budget piece will need some work and upgrades to be a gig worthy piece.

Also Danelectro is offering their new 63 reissue bass in both 34 and 30 inch scale.

Hofner now has the Icon Series Beatle bass, those are all 30 inches and with the new Icon Series you can get a Hofner for less than $400...they are pretty nice too! Also, HOfner is doing several other reissues that are amazing...lots more money but killer!

There are both Gibson and Epiphone reissues if the EB-3 "SG" Bass...those are 30 inchs...get yer Jack Bruce on! Also, Epiphone is doing an EB-0 as well whch is an SG Bass with only one pickup.

Gretsch has several in their line as well as the Electromatic line.

Also Ibanez has a few semi-hollow 30 incher's in the Artcore series that are pretty cool.

Ampeg is still doing reissues of the Dan Armostrong plexi Bass...too cool!

I know there are more but those are the ones I know about right off the top of my head...

Re: Looking for a short scale bass

Thanks for the info guys! Sounds like I've got some options. I'm basically just looking for something to record with at the moment. Trying to be "good" and not spend alot since I recently got engaged and need to save for the big day.

This seems very tempting though...

...looks like the closest place I can find one is in AC, NJ. :banghead:
