Looking for amp suggestions.

Hey guys i'm looking for my first amp head. I've been playing through a Fender Frontman 212R for like 4 years and I think I'm ready for the big valve step so I'm looking for options.

Here's what I'm looking for:

  • 50w or less (Don't really need more than that).
  • Switchable channels.
  • Suitable for a wide range of genres (I'm very metal, but sometimes I wanna play some cheesy pop).
  • Effect loop.
  • Don't really need to have reverb (as long as the head has an effect loop).

And that's about it, looking forward to read someone.

Marshall JVM205H (whatever the 50 watt JVM is)
Blackstar HT Venue 50 watt or 20 watt whichever seems more you.
EVH 5150III 50 watt model

Re: Looking for amp suggestions.

Hi there
My .02€:
  • If you strongly favor metal and only occasionally venture in poppier sounds, the Engl Screamer/Thunder. These will work fine especially with twin humbuckers. I currently own a Thunder reverb combo and can testify to its resilience, as stated in a previous post.
  • If you prefer more versatility, the Koch Twintone, especially if you can shape your sound with some pedals.

Re: Looking for amp suggestions.

if your budget allows
Carvin makes some nice ones
the X100b and the Belair

the Belair is the one I have and sounds really nice

Re: Looking for amp suggestions.

Sorry I missed that, my budget is about 950, and I'm looking for a "sure thing" because I probably won't be able to test it as I'm not a US resident and we don't have many music stores where I live.

EDIT: and also I don't like Marshalls.

Re: Looking for amp suggestions.

Laney makes a good one too

Mine is solid state
But has nice British sound

Re: Looking for amp suggestions.

Thanks guys, I've narrowed your suggestions down to the 5150 III and the Ironheart, I'll start looking on how I'm going to get them here to my town.
Thank you, again.

Hi there.
I too have a Belair, and totally love its clean channel.
While I'm not that impressed with the soak channel, I find it still vintagey, and in any case usable at low to very low gain levels, beyond which everything I play seems to be stuck in quicksands. That could be just me, for sure...
Anyway, nowhere near metal, at least to my faulty ears, and that's why I didn't recommend it to the OP.

Did you manage to get metal tones out of the baby? If so, please share your experience... tho I'm not interested in metal per se, I'd sure appreciate any way to overcome the shortcomings of the soak channel.

TIA,

Andrea

Re: Looking for amp suggestions.

Hit the clean channel with some distortion pedals

The soak channel sounds to me very similar to the Boss DS1

I have a DS1 so I sent it into the soak channel
Kinda cascaded

Keep the soak channel gain low

Thanks! I'll sure give it a try

Re: Looking for amp suggestions.

Actually I was considering the mini recto and mini mark V for a while. Also I was at some point considering single recto, but the shipping destroys my. budget.
