Looking for Dirty Fingers

Re: Looking for Dirty Fingers

I have an early one I have had since the mid 80's ,tabs drilled out for direct mounting, only 2 wire though

Re: Looking for Dirty Fingers

Beware the many newer counterfeits! If you can get a legit older one, go for it!

Re: Looking for Dirty Fingers

I wondered about fakes, there's a ton listed on eBay from china. Lowlifes.

Chaoz, the holes drilled isn't a big deal, I can replace the baseplate when switching to four wire, but what would you need for it?

Re: Looking for Dirty Fingers

I been eatin' Cheetos. I eat like a gentleman, so I only got two dirty fingers. And of course my knuckles.

Re: Looking for Dirty Fingers

AFAIK at least some of the Chinese sellers are legit, selling the actual pickups that end up in Gibson US guitars. There was some random twist that some Epiphone guitars were equipped with the same pickups as the US made Gibsons and a batch made it over there.

I have one of those Chinese made DFs with the gold logo here (curiosity...) and the construction is like Gibson US, not the usual tight glued up Asian pickup nonsense.

Re: Looking for Dirty Fingers

I'm not saying yours isn't legit, but there ARE many fake "Dirty Fingers" floating around out there and that's not just coming from me! Do a search on the Gibson and My Les Paul forums...

All I'm saying is that you'd be surprised how "real" a good counterfeit is and pickups do not have nearly the complexity of most other items. Face it, a logoed bobbin, a stamped baseplate and a little paper tape are easy things to replicate. Also, the "glued up" nature you associate with production Asian pickups from Artec, G&B, etc. is a broad generalization (think: stereotype) that doesn't apply to many of the pickups from smaller Asian manufacturers. I will tell you this...origin and price are good initial indications as to whether a product is legitimate or not. If you got a "new" Dirty Fingers pickup for 2/3 the normal price from an Asian seller on eBay...well...just be aware of the possibilities.

By the way, I've seen more than my fair share of counterfeits in life...many indistinguishable from the real thing, even under intense levels of scrutinization. I was a quality control engineer for a board-level component procurement firm where we dealt with chips, processors, resistors, etc. on a daily basis. A multi-meter and good set of eyes wasn't enough to discern the real parts from the fake parts, but that's all a typical player will ever use to inspect a pickup. We needed microscopes, X-ray machines, composition analyzers and completely destructive methods of testing to weed out the counterfeits and we found batches of them almost every single day!

I've also spent time in the marketplaces of 6 Asian countries (and China twice), Mexico many times, plus I've personally been subject to counterfeit fraud more than once buying online. Believe me, there's a reason to be skeptical :)

FWIW, I agree with all that. I was merely pointing out that for the specific case of the DFs currently available from a Chinese seller there was an explanation about Epiphones with US pickups that looked convincing. I think this DF sounds proper, although I only listened to it very briefly.

Re: Looking for Dirty Fingers

The thing about the original Dirty Fingers, is that they were a one trick pony , but they did that one trick really well. Much better dirty than the new ones. The new ones are less "dirty", but clean up pretty well.
Just get a real one..I dont know about fakes. get one from a USA seller.
Why do I always have to tell you what to do??

Re: Looking for Dirty Fingers

Don't orpheo King Izz0))).

It's cool, Dean can hit him up. I never sent ChAoZ a PM and dude never replied to this thread. Anyway, I had enough parts to build another 498/500T hybrid, this time with double slug coils with SuperD screws in place of the slugs. I haven't tried it yet, but I think it'll do, haha.

Re: Looking for Dirty Fingers

I have a Dirty Fingers Plus that came out of my 335S. It has A2 mags. It also has a black nickel half surround like the surround on a P94. It has the circuitboard hookup, but all you need to do is cut it off and you have 4 conductor. It only got a couple weeks play time on it.

IMO it sounds much nicer than a old DF, mids and highs not so hard/harsh, but YMMV.

LMK if interested or have any other questions.
