Looking For Fat Tone For LP

Hey Everyone! I'm working on replacing the stock BurstBuckers in my LP with SD's and need some advice. I'm looking for a full, round, fat, growling tone in my neck pick-up and an even, balanced tone in the bridge. I was thinking of going with Alnico II Pros because they have the highest bass EQ of the more vintage style pick-ups.

Anyone else out there tried for this tone combo with any success?

Great combo and I think it would be succesful depending. What kind of music do you play and what amp?

Re: Looking For Fat Tone For LP

Love the APH(n) in a Les Paul. The APH neck is my favorite neck humbucker EVER. Haven't tried the bridge version in an LP to be honest. I have the APH set in a Dean Hardtail, and it is awsome, although lately I find that the bridge doesn't have the "bite" I'm looking for. It may be just my changing taste however. It is a very warm, thick tone.

Like Odie said, a lot will depend on your amp and style of music. The 59' can be nice and thick in an LP, so can the CC and the Custom. Some of this will depend on the natural "tone" of your Lester.

Re: Looking For Fat Tone For LP

I'm using a APH-1n and CC in my LP Standard. Def. one of my favorite combos in a Les Paul.

I was thinking of this combo for the user also but, we will have to see what his style and amp are for me to say 100%.

Re: Looking For Fat Tone For LP

I'm currently using a Fender Hot Rod DeVille 4x10 60W tube amp and feeding my guitar thru a Boss Overdrive and MXR DynaComp. I play mostly blues based rock n' roll. I almost always roll my tone controls down and use a fair amount of gain to get a growling, dirty tone with tons of sustain and not the characteristic treble bite of a Strat.

Re: Looking For Fat Tone For LP

Based on that, I'm sticking with the APH set.

Based on what he said, I second that. The APH's sound GREAT when you roll the tones!!!! To me, thats when they really come alive!

Great! Thanks a lot guys! I can't wait to get the APN's in there and start shaking the neighbor's windows! :scratchch

Re: Looking For Fat Tone For LP

I have a Les Paul Standard that has the Alnico 2 Pro set in it. I tried every other production Duncan, Fralins, a WCR Darkburst, and Gibson 57 Classics in it trying to get the tone I wanted. The Alnico 2 Pro neck is head and shoulders above the rest -- truly my favorite neck humbucker. I can't get a better tone out of the bridge than the A2Pro, though the 59 was a close second. I really feel that these are the best sounding production pickups that Duncan makes for the Les Paul.

My other LP has a WCR Goodwood in the bridge. Huge, fat, warm tone with clarity in every note.

Re: Looking For Fat Tone For LP

I'd actually buy a pickup from Bada, so the plug is ok.

Re: Looking For Fat Tone For LP

Since I'll be replacing BurstBucker Pros with new APN's I know I'll have 2 GIbson pick-up covers laying around. Not sure how much the German Silver covers will affect the sound though and whether the stock Gibson covers will fit snuggly over the SD's. Anyone tried these pick-ups both ways? I also read a few notes around the 'net about possible damage to uncovered pick-ups (aggressive picking damaging the coils thru the tape and wax potting). I know it's not likely to happen, but worth it if there's a serious risk?

I never found any material difference in sound between covered vs. non-covered pickups. I personally like the look of uncovered better. As for using the Gibson covers, I'm not sure if they fit. My guess would be yes, but maybe someone else can confirm.

Re: Looking For Fat Tone For LP

It is my understanding that he would need SD covers... the spacing is a little different and (if I remember correctly) some other forum bros tried it and it didn't fit...

I could be wrong tho, feel free to correct me. :)

I am nearly positive the Gibson covers will fit. I have used covers off of 57 classics on Duncans and the fit was perfect. IIRC, 57 classics and burstbuckers have the same spacing. I would strongly suggest getting the pickups covered from Duncan becasue, if a pickup is not potted with the cover on, it can cause squealing. Plus, you wont have to worry about the pickup covers not fitting correctly.

Not enough change in tone between coved and un-covered to make a difference.

Re: Looking For Fat Tone For LP

Just be forewarned that although the bass # on the A2P is higher than on the 59 it is a different looser bass. In fact I'd say it was more of a low mids than true bass, because the A2P doesn't get woofy like a 59.

All that said, the A2P is a great pup, I really dig them.

Cool, I thought they wouldn't... good to know. :)
