Looking for info on Seymour Duncan Pickup Booster Circuit.

Re: Looking for info on Seymour Duncan Pickup Booster Circuit.

Edit: Correction: You only need to connect your input. It has everything else connected. It provides from 6 to 26db gain.

Re: Looking for info on Seymour Duncan Pickup Booster Circuit.

I have one in an LP, currently boosting the piezo signal. It works great and the battery seems to last forever too. The cool thing about it is easily replaceable volume pot - any 25k will do.

Re: Looking for info on Seymour Duncan Pickup Booster Circuit.

The product is the guts of the SD booster pedal, designed to fit inside an existing guitar.

I have to question the sentence claiming the advantages of active pickups. The product is a straightforward midrange booster. The intention is to fatten up the sound of a vintage style Stratocaster.

Re: Looking for info on Seymour Duncan Pickup Booster Circuit.

its not a midrange booster, its a flat preamp boost

Re: Looking for info on Seymour Duncan Pickup Booster Circuit.

Thanks everyone, I would have answered earlier but I just got out of bed being down here in Australia.

I realize it is a straight forward flat eq boost but wonder if it does fatten up the sound a bit...? Not that it's a bad thing but just wondering. I think I'll buy it. I was also looking at the offerings from GFS but trust the quality of the Duncan unit better.

Cheers,
Johnny

It does, sorta. You can flip the resonance switch to position 1 or 2 to fatten things up a bit, or, its simple function as a buffer can help to prevent other pedals from loading down your guitar. That, by itself, can help tremendously.

i dont know if the guitar unit has the res switch, i dont believe it does

Isn't the switch in this pic the resonance switch? :scratchch

I really need to order one of these things to play with. :naughty:

Re: Looking for info on Seymour Duncan Pickup Booster Circuit.

Well, if your looking at this, then you may as well consider either the EMG PA-2 which is the same kind of preamp booster on a mini toggle switch that turns it on and off, adjustable from the back/inside the control cavity.

Or your other option is an EMG Afterburner. The Afterburner is a push/pull pot that's more controlable and user friendly than the PA-2. The push/pull is the on/off (up is on...), and you turn it like a volume or tone pot to increase or cut boost level.

Re: Looking for info on Seymour Duncan Pickup Booster Circuit.

I've looked into the aforementioned but many people have had problems with passive pickups using those circuits. I'm not 100% sure how true this is but it has been consistent enough with my google searches to say that something is going on.

I think the switch is an on/off switch but not 100% sure.

All the more reason why I need to get one of these and play with it. I was just playing my "Batwing" Epiphone Strat through my SFX-01, and it sounded killer. This would be a perfect plug-in for that cheap axe. ;)

Ok . . . just ordered one. Can't wait to play with this.

Okay, you can't have all the fun here, I'm ordering one as well. : party:

Re: Looking for info on Seymour Duncan Pickup Booster Circuit.

Did your seal point get a haircut? I have a new seal point kitten!! As far as the boos circuit , I would just get a hotter fatter sounding pup. This is for a Strat right? I use Duncan vintage rails. Excellent pups!

Ya, he did. It's quite hot where I live so he gets chopped twice a year, he's a Himalayan, thanks for asking. Always nice to have a new kitten, hours of entertainment and cuddles if you're lucky. Enjoy.

I like my setup, I running BG V60's in the neck and middle and a BG Phatty in the bridge. I've had the vintage rails, not quite warm enough for me, or so my ears told me but it's a pretty subjective thing pickups. Just looking for some fun with a booster and would rather have it on board.

Cheers,
Johnny

Re: Looking for info on Seymour Duncan Pickup Booster Circuit.

Cool, I have & use the Pickup Booster pedal & it is great fairly non-colored boost - compares with boutique stuff that costs multiple time more. It really adds juice & complexity to the tone.
I'm very curious how your installation of the onboard version goes & what you think.
Edit, I just reread the link & it says the switch is a bypass switch.

Re: Looking for info on Seymour Duncan Pickup Booster Circuit.

First a bit of history here. Back in the '90s, my contact at Jackson Guitars asked us to design an on-board boost circuit, which we did. We called it the GEQ-1 Firestorm. It was only available OEM and Jackson installed it on a guitar called the Dinky Firestorm. Because the PCB was manufactured off-shore, we called it a Duncan Designed product. A little while later, the same guy at Jackson asked us to put the same circuit into a stompbox which they wanted to include in a "Christmas Pack." We did all the design and development work, but in the end, our price to them would've been too expensive for their Pack. But since we had already done all the work, we decided to release it as a Seymour Duncan stomp box. Unlike the Firestorm, we added variable boost from 6 to 25dB and we added the Resonance Switch. Of course, that's what became the SFX-01 Pickup Booster.

AFAIK, unfortunately, the GEQ-1 Firestorm is not available for after-market sale.

I think the switch is an on/off switch but not 100% sure.

That is true.

Re: Looking for info on Seymour Duncan Pickup Booster Circuit.

Thanks for the info Evan. Do you happen to know which of the 3 position switch settings (of the pedal) the onboard model linked above is set at?

Re: Looking for info on Seymour Duncan Pickup Booster Circuit.

The GEQ-1 Firestorm doesn't have a Resonance Switch. So that's basically the middle position of the 3-way slider switch on the SFX-01 Pickup Booster, in which the Resonance Switch isn't engaged.
