Go the original V route, and use PAF's. Duncan makes some of the best. Pair of '59's would be nice.

Re: looking for non high output pups for...

Any particular tone you're shooting for? There's always the entire PAF-ish range - from the 59 to the CC or C5 (though the C5 might be higher-output than what you're looking for).

I'm guessing someone will suggest the Slash set, or maybe the Alnico Pro/II?

Assuming you're going for Schenker (V+Marshall+Pedal), you'd want something similar to what Gibson pickups he used. If, on the other hand, you're going for Albert King.....

Anything with a ceramic will give you a bit of a grinding "tonal halo" - some fuzz/fizz around chords and single notes on wound strings - which will become more prominent as gain increases. A CC (A2) will give you a bit of a biting/piercing plain-string tone and a raspy wound-string tone, with good chord definition.

A covered CC will give you Vol. 4-era Iommi if you drop it down to C#.

You won't need a JB (even with an A2) since the V will already give you a pronounced-mid tone, unless you want to sound like you've got a half-cocked wah on all the time.

Re: looking for non high output pups for...

Not looking for half cocked wah or ceramics. I was considering a set up 59's but i'm not a big fan of the 59n. This guitar is already very bright. possibly considering 59b, PGn.

Brobucker or '78 bridge, PGn. Just a thought. A stock '59 might be a tad bright.

Welcome! I use a 59b in the neck of an explorer and several other guitars. Gives me alil more cream when soloing on the neck.. 59s would be good choice. I dont think many (if any) Duncans give the cocked wah sound. That is usually had with Dimarzios. I know you said no ceramics, but the Duncan Custom is a great rock pickup and doesnt behave like most ceramic pups.. Just a side note..

Re: looking for non high output pups for...

The '59b with a UOA5 mag makes a great bridge pup. PGn is a good compliment.

Re: looking for non high output pups for...

I'd suggest the Screamin' Demon.

Don't be fooled by the name. It's a PAF-based, low output humbucker, a bit bassier and thicker than a '59b, very articulate.
A PAF on steroids, some say. Very tight on the lows, very neutral in the mids.

Not the most common choice, but it would be bread and butter.

Re: looking for non high output pups for...

In terms of preferable output, low to high(er), 59', PG, SD. Tonal context-> 59' being the most neutral, PG on the brighter side, yet still big sounding, and the Demon. Just Demon!

Re: looking for non high output pups for...

I'm starting to think the Brobucker/Pearly Gates N is my favorite combo in anything with mahogany/maple. But a set you'd probably like is the C5/PGn. The C5 still has that vintage tone but hits the amp a little harder. For hard rock into a Marshall, that set should do really well.
And with a C5, you can try other magnets in the pickup, if you want to pull it in a certain direction.

Diego hit the nail right on the head, a friend of mine recently set his gibby V up with a pair of Demons and they handle anything you can throw at them.

Re: looking for non high output pups for...

Check out the Dimarzio 36th anniversary pups. They work well in my mahogany/ebony Carvin.
