Looking for pickup to contrast the SH-8 in my other guitar

I've got a SH-8 Invader in my Esquire Custom GT, which I really like and find to be pretty different from other Duncan pickups I've tried.
It has that distinct "gnarl" to it, which I find great.

Now I got a new Schecter Diamond C-1 mahogany guitar with a bolt-on neck, which came with crappy EMG-HZ humbuckers that I'd like to exchange.

I love the Invader for the fact that is has a very pronounced mid range and smooth highs (hence the tone chart, low to high 7 / 8 / 4), but this time I'm looking for a pickup that goes the opposite road, featuring sharper highs and a more open sound, so I'm considering the SH-10 Full Shred for the bridge.

I play 80s & 90s rock/metal and a ton of punkish stuff like blink-182, The Offspring etc. I also absolutely love that 80s hairspray metal sound!

Re: Looking for pickup to contrast the SH-8 in my other guitar

u tried the duncan distortion? great for metal, pop punk etc.
tom delonge used the invader a lot in the earlier blink days, now he uses a gibson "dirty fingers" maybe look into that for modern blink tones. many punk and metal bands use the duncan distortion, i use one in my fender and its great

Nope, I haven't tried the SH-6 yet, but some of my favorite artists (both musically and soundwise) like Alien Ant Farm and Papa Roach use it.

Yepp, I know Delonge used the Invader for several years.
I had the Dirty Fingers in my Ibanez MFM2 back then. Great pickup, but I swapped it for a DiMarzio Breed, cause I needed something with better cleans (my Ibanez is a single humbucking guitar).

Re: Looking for pickup to contrast the SH-8 in my other guitar

if you want good cleans the distortion isn't really good for that imo. but you can always put something cooler in the neck for more versatility

Re: Looking for pickup to contrast the SH-8 in my other guitar

Well, I was looking at the Full Shred, because it seems to be somewhat like Duncan's "underdog" pickup as I don't know of many artists who use it (except for Lagwagon and Motörhead).
And more often than not, I dig the stuff that's not a big hit with the crowd.

The tone chart of the SH-10 looks interesting to me: low to high 4 / 4 / 8

I think it would do a good job on opening up my Schecter C-1, as the mahogany body has enough midrange character by itself already.

The Schecter has H-H setup, so I don't have to care about cleans for the bridge pickup. I'm just gonna get a Jazz or 59 model for the neck.

ye you dont hear a lot about the full shread, maybe someone else in here can give you more info on it.
i know what you mean about not going for the most popular pickups, theres nothing worse then everyone sounding the same and looking for other peoples tones, im sure with a full shread you'll find your own tone, just go for it

i think you'd like the FS, but it's not the best pickup for the sound you're describing; i'd consider the JB or the DD, as mentioned above

How about the SH-15 Alternative 8? Read some pretty good things about it. Some like to refer to it as a JB/Distortion hybrid, which definitely sounds interesting!

Re: Looking for pickup to contrast the SH-8 in my other guitar

i've not tried it, unfortunately...

I have a Charvel 750XL (fixed bridge) that I just loaded a pair of Full Shreds into. Sounds great, but this guitar was made for the Full Shred set.

I did have a Distortion Mayhem set in there, but it was just too much - output, fatness, etc.

Matching the pickup to the guitar is important. You got to look at the guitar and figure out what it needs.

+1 for the full shred

Or if you want the duncan detonator might be right up your alley as well, its a great little pup

Isn't the Duncan Designed Detonator supposed to be the poor man's SH-8 Invader? Don't need that.

I got a mahogany Schecter Diamond C-1. I'm looking for something to shoot the lower mids a little outta it.

Re: Looking for pickup to contrast the SH-8 in my other guitar

Full Shred = absolute hairband era ! Trust me ! You'll love it for that.

Re: Looking for pickup to contrast the SH-8 in my other guitar

The Full Shred is very direct, very assertive. Can be hard to make "nice music" with as some smoothing is removed. Given that you seem to prefer the Invader over the DD I would have to guess it'll not be to your taste.

The C5 for a loud Alnico pickup might be right. It has normal PAF polepices that fill things in better but with no compression and being scooped it would be the opposite of the Invader.
