Looking for Some Ideas

I find myself looking for a new project... Im doing some studio work with a friend and we have decided to use some dropped B tuning stuff. Most of my guitars are LP/PRS style stuff so Id like to find a decent cheaper 25 1/2 scale guitar. Trying to avoid the typical Squier, Ibanez RG route. Been thinking of an older Yamaha, maybe base model rgz. Looking for hardtails preferably.
Any other brands or suggestions? Thanks.

Re: Looking for Some Ideas

I picked up a used shechter S1 in a swap for a strat that I never used and I've been pretty impressed with it. Mine is getting a Bigsby and refinished in Pelham blue sometime this summer.

Re: Looking for Some Ideas

Those are sweet, but still set neck, 24 3/4 scale like most of mine.

Most Schecters are 25.5" scale.

How cheap are you looking? You can typically find the Schecter C1s and Blackjacks in the $250ish range. Those are set neck models and typically have good pickups. Or you can go *really* cheap and get a used Omen in the $100-$125 range. They're all solid guitars. Resale value will be better than the Yamaha. (They make good guitars, but people typically shy away from them because of the name.)

I had an Elite that awesome and was 25 1/2. I guess I should consider them , I just didnt because they are so similar to PRS and the other guitarist is using LP/PRS. I wanted some tine separation.

Re: Looking for Some Ideas

I can tell you that I have an 80's Yamaha strat copy that I bought in 89'. It sat for years until I really learned to play. I decided to refinish it after all those years and it surprisingly turned into the best sounding strat I had, US built or otherwise. My model has a big old floating trem on it, but I blocked it off level and use it like that. The SE620 I have has two humbuckers, but other similar models had more vintage strat setups. I've been so pleased with this guitar since I can't even describe it. This sound was in the guitar all these years, I just never gave it a chance.

You can pick up Yamaha's like this all day long under $300 and usually much less. That's my only experience with import or budget starts.
