Looking for some pickups

I'm looking for a set of pickups to put in my Hamer. The Rio Grandes that came in it didn't seem to do the acoustic properties of the guitar justice, and were a little too dark for me. I am really considering a set of Wagner (WCR) Darkbursts, but man it's hard to shell out $260 for a set of pickups :laugh2:.

I'm looking to use this guitar for modern blues and rock. I'm talking tones along the lines of Lynyrd Skynyrd, Black Crowes, STP, etc. Any tips on maybe a set of Duncans that might fit the bill? I'm not a JB fan, and a '59 neck in this kind of guitar is too boomy for me from past experience. One of my initial thoughts was a '59 or CC bridge/Alnico II Pro neck?

EDIT: I should add that I'm really looking for clarity and dynamics here. Muddy neck pickup is a no-no, and neither pickup should be grainy or buzzy sounding.

Re: Looking for some pickups

refresh my memory ... is it a Studio Special, or whatever the double cutaway flat top is called?

I tend to look at what Hamer uses for reference, then go from there ... but I haven't replaced any pups in my Hamers yet. I did get a '59 for the bridge in my Studio, since that's what they replaced the JB with in the newer ones.

I love the tone of Seths in my Artist, but it's a partly hollow design

it seems like the APH/ CC combo is a really popular choice for those who don't want the '59.

Re: Looking for some pickups

It's a Special FM. Mahogany body, flat maple top (about 3/8" thick). Set mahogany/rosewood neck, Gibson scale, etc.

Re: Looking for some pickups

then yeah, I'd say the APH/ CC ... though mind you I haven't tried those myself. I'm going on what others have posted.

Lew said his Monaco SuperPro sounds killer with that combo, although it's a chambered body.

let's see what other tone bros have to say ...

Re: Looking for some pickups

I have an APH/Super Distortion combo in mine that I'm liking a lot lately. Keep in mind, mine is much older and has the sustain block bridge system. From the Duncans, I liked the APH/C5 combo and the PGb/Custom combo.

BTW, what color are the Rio's and what are you planning on doing with them? ;)

Re: Looking for some pickups

i'd think a set of A2 seths would be killer too ... but a CC/AIIP set would likely also gonna sound quite good

gotta love the 21 day try out period no ? :D

good luck

Re: Looking for some pickups

The Rios are already sold guys, sorry. It was a zebra BBQ/Texas set.

DAMN YOU!!!!

J/K.

I have a zebra JB sitting in a drawer. I can ship it to you if you want to try it out.

Re: Looking for some pickups

For reference, I had a set of PGs in my Schecter and really liked them a lot. However, I want something a little smoother in this axe, without as much sizzle and grit on the high end.
