Looking for something cheap to play with...

Fulltone

So I'm looking into get a strat that I can noodle around with, but I'm having trouble finding something in my range, used or otherwise. About $250 is my limit... basically I want to put a couple phat cats in there, so HH/swimming pool routing is necessary. I don't mind buying used or anything, so throw some ideas at me, please. Also, while not a necessity, 22 frets would be preferred over 21, thanks.

Jackson JS-1
H-H config, 22 frets, 2 point knife edge tremolo, and plays better than most guitars in it's price range.

Look on eBay for a used Epi SG Std (G-400). You can get them for $200 to $250 in excellent condition. No re-routing needed, so you don't have to carve out a half the guitar's body. Put in a couple Phat Cats, and you have the legendary SG Special from the 1960's. Full access to all 22 frets too. Mahogany gives a warm, rich tone. Epi's got G-400's in all kinds of colors & configurations (red, white, black, amber, brown, blue, etc), regular wood or flame maple, small angelwing pickguard or large batwing.

I've done that with a few Epi SG's (with various American-made PU's), and they sound great, as good as a Gibson SG. Best sound for anything in that price range. Let me know if I can help you with an SG.

Hm, does anyone have any idea what the routing on a Peavey Predator is like? If it's swimming pool I could probably just get another pickguard... hmm!

Thanks.
