Looking for Stat single coils

Hay all, been quite a while since I've been on here.
I'm looking for suggestions on a single coil set for a Strat.
I like the in between positions a lot and would like a beefier low end oomph from the bridge than a standard Strat.
The guitar they would be going in (to start) has a Philippine Mahogany body, VG maple neck with an Ebony FB and a standard 6 screw bridge.

Thanks, John

That's an interesting combo of wood, it won't be neck heavy, that's for sure.

As for pickups I'll suggest my usual Strat pickup set STK-S7n, STK-S4m, STK-S6b. If you want a description, Google "Seymour Duncan Chistopher S7n S4m S6b". You'll find a lot of info. :D

Vintage, moderate, or hot?

SSL-1 with an SSL-5 bridge is a favorite combo.

Re: Looking for Stat single coils

+1 to SSL-1/SSL-5 as a starting point for consideration.

Depending on your budget, I’d also throw the TVJones Starwood set into the mix. They’ve totally brought me back to my Strat (which had been relegated to a “sometimes for recording” guitar).

If you don't need a hot bridge pickup then full ssl1s is the way to go. Otherwise add an ssl5 in the bridge pos.

For a beefier low end for bridge, with classic strat tone, answer is SSL-5/SSl-1 set.

Not for me though.

I almost always play in-between positions (or series). SSl-7/SSl-5 in bridge/middle makes an awesome rockin' combo!

SSL-1 with an SSL-5 bridge is a favorite combo.

That’s the direction I’d go.

Or what I use: two Duncan Surfers and a Fralin Steel Pole 43.

No RW/RP...I use an Ilitch backplate to make my Strat hum free and noiseless.

Re: Looking for Stat single coils

I'm a big fan of the Antiquity Texas Hots. More beef in the bridge
and the 2 and 4 spots sounded heavenly to me. Good luck.

Peace,

Darrin

Re: Looking for Stat single coils

It's not neck heavy, but it's not as heavy as you would think. Philippine Mahogany isn't a real heavy wood.
Vintage, modern or hot?...... Doesn't need to be vintage or hot. I like Jeff Beck's and David Gilmour's tones. I've had humbuckers in the bridge position of all my guitars so far (Super Distortion, C/59 UOA5, C UOA5, 78, JB) and have wanted one with a single coil in the bridge, that was less trebley and had more growl.
I don't care if they are hum cancelling in the 2 and 4 position, after all 1,3 and 5 won't be. I want a good 2 and 4 quack, a beefier warmer 1, and a good warm 5.
Thank you for the input!
Any more suggestions/thoughts?

Thanks, John

Re: Looking for Stat single coils

I like Jeff Beck's and David Gilmour's tones.

SSL-1 neck and middle and SSL-5 bridge.

The SSL-5 was actually designed for Gilmour and was called an “SSL-1C” (with the C standing for custom), but the pickup eventually went into production as the SSL-5

It sounds like you aren't interested in noiseless. Good to know.

I like position 2 with an SSL-6 and SSL-2, but I don't consider it to be very traditional, otherwise I'd say SSL-6 and a pair or -2s (or SSL-5/SSL-1 if vintage stagger is your thing). Something between an SSL-1/-2 and SSL-5/-6 ought to work better in the bridge position...

FWIW, aside from hum-cancellation, I chalk claims of tonal differences between using RW/RP and standard in the middle up as voodoo.

Hi Darrin, I have a set of those in my Strat that’s set up for slide. Really sweet and warm. Perfect, for me, because they’re not so steely bright as regular Strat pickups. Got Surfers in one Strat and Texas Hots in my other.

Aside of hum cancelling. Note that parallel they have twice the hum.

I personally have never had problems with it, though I use regular single coils almost solely.

Of course mains hum here is 50hz so it's less noticeable.

Re: Looking for Stat single coils

I just go with the flat models...SSL-2, SSL-2, SSL-6.
Man after my own heart! Used that set up several times and agree on the flats. I used an old set of the the Alnico II flats with a SSl-5 I have had on hand for years in my 2000 Mex and am REALLY liking that set up right now in this particular guitar.

Re: Looking for Stat single coils

What happens to the bass from a single coil pickup if I put a 2.5H inductor in parallel with it?
