Loss of overdrive

Have another Gibby SG in the shop, owner says it looses too much when tapering down volume, goes right to clean as soon as he goes off of 10, go to 9 and it stays clean all the way to 1. It has standard alpha pots (not original gibson) and 0.22 caps. The work done looks shabby.

Sounds weird. What are you using for pickups and overdrive? Amp? Pedal? And does it still happen when you max out the gain/overdrive?

The tapers on pots can vary widely, and some are pretty steep (although I've never found one that tapered that much from 10 to 9). Is this maybe just an audio vs linear pot taper thing?

Sometimes the carbon resistive strip gets worn down over time, giving this effect. This is impossible to know without opening the pot and inspecting it. I would pop in a new pot to see how it performs.

I always use audio taper and have never experienced that much of a drop-off.
Could be bad pot. I would do what Securb suggested and try a new pot just to see. It's a simple enough test.

Ok, I didnt do the work and maybe It's not tapering off right at 9 but it does sound severe, the work done looks shabby and non professional the owner did not say if he did it himself but thats what I suspect. I will replace the 2 vol pots with new ones and clean up the messy work and
see what happens. Thanks for all the input.
