Lotsa stompboxes, change to Gmajor? HELP!

I was discussing FX setups with one of my co-workers. He's a guy named Terry and he used to work for Custom Audio Electronics, is a skilled guitar player with excellent chops and tone, etc etc... I was discussing my new amp with him and we got into effects setups.

I'm starting to think my pedalboard is getting too crowded so Terry suggested I dump all my stompboxes and get a TC Electronic G Major, and control it with a MIDI Pedal. I'd still use my wah, whammy pedal, Keeley DS1 and the amp reverb while the G Major would take care of chorus, flange, delays, reverbs, harmonizing, tremolo, and compression.

He has one (along with his other collection, which included some VERY high end stuff) and he says it's a very good unit for someone who needs a good amount of effects but a minimal setup.

So basically my setup would be just my guitars, a pedalboard with my wah, whammy, distortion, and EQ and the rest of the crap above would be sitting in the FX loop on top of the amp with a MIDI pedal to control it.

Does this sound like a good idea? Is the G Major a good unit? I think Terry is on the right track cuz he's very picky about his own rig and tone (which is awesome).

I just want some opinions, that's all.

The G Major sounds great...it is unlikely *any* stopboxes would be as transparent and sound as good. I'd recommend the Behringer FCB1010 to control it.

Re: Lotsa stompboxes, change to Gmajor? HELP!

I have a pair of Rocktron processors and I have considered selling one and then getting a G Major on more than one occasion, just to have more flexability in my rack. the Rocktrons are a bit redundant.

Midi adds quite a bit of flexability to your rig and puts large program changes under your feet under a single button. It's definately something to consider.

That's exactly what Terry recommended... plus that will be able to switch amp channels as well.

Currently I have
-Crybaby wah
-MXR phase 90
-Keeley ds1
-GE7
-Digitech Whammy
-cs9 reissue
-DD6
-Dan-Echo

...and my pedalboard is full and I still need a few more effects, So now all I'll need on my board is my Wah, the Keeley DS-1, my GE7 and my Whammy! plus the Behringer which isn't complicated. A decision has been made and I'm gonna get one of those processors. Thanks guys!

Let us know how you go - I'd be very interested.

Hope it works great!

Man....how do you live with so many stomp boxes? I find it a pain in the ass to have anything more than guitar and amp...although all those sounds would be nice ;)

When I first started looking into the Soldanos, Sean Ballou at Mike's shop recommended that I look into the Gmajor for my effects. Since the SLO-100 is without reverb, he said that it would do a stellar job of adding reverb, chorus, flange, etc., which could be controlled by a MIDI pedal. It can also change channels, too, which was a nice addition.

Although I haven't bought one, I am strongly considering it since I'm currently without Reverb on my big rig. Please let us know how it works for you. I'm very interested to hear your scoop on it.

The amp I will be using it has reverb, but it's rather shallow. It's a 50W Mesa Rectoverb Head. The actual tone of the amp is nothing short of awesome, though. It;s the best vintage Fender AND the best vintage Marshall I've ever heard. ;)

there are a lot of high-end amp heads that do not have reverb, but then again most outboard units are better anyway.
