Loud Popping Sound On Certain Notes

I've noticed that when I play certain notes, I get a bit of a non musical popping sound from my amp. I've tried playing on my tube amp and modeling amp, and I only seem to get the noise from the tube amp.

It doesn't happen on any particular individual notes, even if I attack hard, but it often starts to happen when I start playing multiple notes in rapid succession higher up the neck. I don't think its sloppy playing either, because it often happens at a time when I know for a fact I made no error.

Could I benefit from using two diodes to suppress transients? That is what I diagnose the issue as, but I'm not electrical expert.

Might be a microphonic preamp tube. First check that they are all seated well.

You can also lightly tap on them with a pencil eraser while the amp is on to see if they make a noise.

Or just don’t play those notes. lol

Oops, sorry, I meant that it only makes the noise on the modeling amp. But it does happen to have a few tubes in it. Some of the presets are purely digital, others have a few tubes involved.

How would I go about checking this out? I've never even opened an amp before and wouldn't know what to look for.

Re: Loud Popping Sound On Certain Notes

Popping from a modeler would be either a socket or connection going bad, or a ADC/DAC clock out of synch, or if it's using tubes, microphonics or other tube problems. Depends on what kind of modeler we're talking about. Depends on if the popping is somewhat 'rhythmic' (timed) independent of playing or volume, or related to volume of the signal, or random unrelated to anything else going on.

Funny. I've just isolated it to one preset on my amp (Johnson Millenium 50). The Fender Twin Reverb bright channel. What could this mean?

Re: Loud Popping Sound On Certain Notes

Here is a totally not likely cause that I thought I should mention -only because it's interesting...

Sometimes, in medium and smaller rooms some notes (often an F#, G, G#, or A -but only one of them) will resonate fundamentally with the the room size -due to the length of the waveform of those notes in relation to the dimensions of the room -which determines the natural phase filtering and cancelation from reflection backs versus the modal buildup in locations.

When this happens, it can actually cause the speaker to distort due only on that certain note (and it's octaves and fifths sometimes) to adverse pressure against the speaker cone depending on the location of the speaker in the room. This creates a farting noise from the speaker fighting to produce the wave.

OP, because it doesn't happen on a specific note, octave or fifth of that note -this is not your problem though.

That's pretty cool, I never thought of that. Resonant frequencies can do some funny things, such as breaking glass or turning a bridge to rubble.

At that point, I would think it’s a flaw in the model itself. I’d search out another J50 and see if it has the same problem.

I have a Johnson J-Station. Check the gain on that preset. It might be too high and you’re hearing digital clipping.

My Marshall Code 100 gets a funny attack on some amp models. I had to mess with the gain on that preset to get rid of it.

I just sent one back, I thought the speakers were cracked.
