Low budget 2x12 combo amp...

my good friend and other guitarist in my band birthday is next month and my other friend and drummer in the band are looking to get him a good used 2x12 combo amp. it doesn't have to be tube and modeling is ok it just has to be loud enough to hang with a loud ass drummer. it's mostly for his own use at home but he may want to use it at rehersals when he isn't using my stuff or the rehersal studios. it needs to do high gain mostly with an ok clean channel. we play a punk/metal mix of music so gain is key here!! anyway our budget is kinda low at $400, i know that won't get me a kick ass tube amp but i figure it can get him something better than the old ass bass amp with boss metal zone pedal he plays through at home now lol. i'm so far looking at a used peavey XXL 2x12 and am open to other options as long as they are at or under $400 and can do high gain well. used is fine obviously.

i'm lost when it comes to low price combo amps, i spend too damn much and like tube driven 1/2 stacks lol.

thanks for the help!

Re: Low budget 2x12 combo amp...

I'd save up another 200 or so and splurge for a 5150. It'd match up perfectly with your Powerball, tonewise.

Otherwise, the XXL would be my other choice.

Re: Low budget 2x12 combo amp...

The Crate GT212 seems to fit that bill, it's 330 new, lol you could probably get an older-model used one for about 180 bucks.

Re: Low budget 2x12 combo amp...

Hmm....didnt i post on this subject?

Anyway The crate gt212 isnt bad at all for the price.

Re: Low budget 2x12 combo amp...

thanks for the info guys.

DDS3 when we get back into gigging and such he;ll play through my peavey ultra plus and marshall cab which works well with me using the powerball/spalwn rig so that's cool. we just want to get him something mostly for home use (since he only has a bass amp now) but also loud enough that if he wanted to bring it to rehersal he would be able to sorta keep up. thus a 2x12 over a 1x12.

Ah alright. In that case, the XXL would be perfect, or even one of the Line6 Spider II's or Flextone III's, if you get the higher wattage ones.

Re: Low budget 2x12 combo amp...

maybe not entirely what u r lokking for but what about a LC 30 or 15 it could do anything from jazz to metal (especially if he has a few pedals) and they r all tube and cheap (well in australia they r)

Re: Low budget 2x12 combo amp...

Actually you could get a tube head for that price, like I've seen a Crate vintage club 50 head for far less than that price, and I'm probably gonna buy it. But I don't know how well it'll work for punk stuff though, lol, maybe with a pedal?? Anyway, the point is that if you look the right places you can get some good stuff for a good price.

Re: Low budget 2x12 combo amp...

I used to own a Crate GLX212 (basically a GT + effects). If you want anything other than good high volume cleans, stay far far away. The gain is terrible and just gets worse as you turn up the volume. I really like the XXL though, as well as the Flextone.

Re: Low budget 2x12 combo amp...

The 100W Line 6 combos aren't that bad for the price, that's what the guitar player used in my band and we played a style similar to yours.

Re: Low budget 2x12 combo amp...

Crate, Laney, and Peavey all make good SS amps in that range.

y'know, you can get a carvin mts on ebay for around that price...

Re: Low budget 2x12 combo amp...

Peavey XXL
Line 6 Flextone
Tech 21

Take your pick!

Re: Low budget 2x12 combo amp...

thanks guys for all the input. i'm still leaning toward the XXL for now since i know the amp and it isn't too bad for a SS amp. as mentioned i'm spoiled by tubes but he should love it over his current bass amp and boss pedal he uses at home now lol.

Re: Low budget 2x12 combo amp...

Look on ebay for a Carvin XV212, all tube, great sounding amp, they usually go for less then $400!

Re: Low budget 2x12 combo amp...

I also put my vote in for the XXL.

Re: Low budget 2x12 combo amp...

For a little more than $500 you could snag a Mesa DC-3 and with a cheap carvin 2X12 could keep up very well with the loud ass drummer. It is one hell of an amp. They go for relatively cheap on ebay and such.
