low capacitance cables?

yay or neigh???

do they really make a difference? ive heard arguments from both sides... now i wanna know what you guys think - is it reasonable to spend more on guitar cables advertised as "low- capacitance"?

Re: low capacitance cables?

It's only more reasonable for someone to maybe want to hear more highs coming through - like me for instance.

If you wanted a warmer or darker sound use a high capacitence cable. Some like these for 'buttery' leads.

Even though someone may favor one cable, I believe most players should own more than one cable of varying capacitences and price ranges. Like, you'll want some cheap cables so you can compare them to the expensive ones and then you'll realize how crappy cheap cables are.

Easy to try out: just use a very short one (still needs to be decent quality). The capacitance, no matter the quality of the material, is proportional to the length. So you can use this to figure out how it would sound with lower capacitance.

In general the (passive) pickups we use have been designed so that they sound right with a regular high-quality guitar cable. Reducing capacitance might make it sound off from what the pickup designer intended.

Re: low capacitance cables?

A couple years ago I went through a bunch of cables I had accumulated and bought a couple new ones and tried them all out. I don't know the capacatance of them but the Lava ELC was the best balanced in listening frequency response and had the best clarity without being harsh in my setup, which is a couple long cables and four pedals. I use the mini-ELC with soldered on Switchcraft plugs. Lava cables are not cheap, but not insanely expensive. I think they are worth the money.

Re: low capacitance cables?

To be more serious, since I normally use a wireless, cables used to quite a problem for me, because WHEN I use one it´s a long one and it will inevitably attenuate more highs than the wireless.

As a result, I generally end up buying the lowest capacitance wire I can find and simply making my own. The sole exception being my backup backup, a 25 yard Samson Armored Cable. 25 years warranty and covered in a steel sleeve much like those used on shower hoses. Stagediver-proof cables are ALWAYS good. ;)

Re: low capacitance cables?

The best way to have a low capacitance cable is to have a SHORT cable.

Cables introduce more capacitance into the signal with increasing length because blah blah blah you don't really care anyways, so if you want to avoid the capacitance, use the shortest cable you can.
