Low Gain Marshall OD

I was just curious to what pedals are out there for getting low gain marshall OD (ala early jimi hendrix). Only two I've really seen marketed towards this are the Fulltone OCD and Lovepedal COT50. Anything else I should check out?

Carl Martin Plexitone?

I think the best way to go is to always have an amp with EL-34's or EL-84's, in addition to your 6L6 amp. Then, the basis of the tone is British, so the OD's will give you any shade of that.

One of the main ingredients of "British tone" is a 4-12 Celestion cab. Surprisingly, even 6L6 amps take on a more British flavor, when plugged into a Marshall 4-12. You'd need to cut your combo's speaker lead, and install male/female jacks. Then, you can use the combo with any speaker cab.

Re: Low Gain Marshall OD

low gain OD ala jimi hendrix is the tone of cranked fender showmans and twins with fuzz added, not marshalls. Hendrix started using marshalls around 1968, so the tone on 'are you experienced' and axis bold as love are fenders and sound city amps.

Re: Low Gain Marshall OD

'are you experienced' was recorded with a BUrns copy of an AC-30...thats a fact. Also, Jimi only used Sound City amps live that I know of, and trust me on this (since I have a Sound City), Sound City amps are not the way to sound like Jimi. Also, Jimi had a muich cleaner tone when using Fender, Sound City or Sunn amps than with the Marshalls...the sound that we all put with Jimi is a Strat and a Marshall.

Now, on the the question...it really depends on your amp, but I will tell you that if you can find (and afford one) a Lovetone Brown Source is a damn fine Plexi Marshall type tone in a box...very mild OD to med gain at best...sounds great with a Strat and a Les Paul. They are out of production but trust me (I have one) they are amazing and worth the cash. Short of that the OCD looks like a good bet as does the Plexitone from Carl Martin as well as the Menatone THE KING OF THE BRITAINS which I tried recently was was very impressed with.

There's quite a buzz around the EH English Muff'n. Seems to nail the old Marshall sound. Also, since it runs on tubes, you can tweak the voicing a bit to fit your ear.

Re: Low Gain Marshall OD

I use a Marshall Bluesbreaker in front of a 900 and I can get pretty close. Then again I am not trying to sound like Jimi ( Igave up trying to a long time ago.... nobody sounds like him).

Re: Low Gain Marshall OD

Id agree with the EH English Muffin OD pedal. Id also go with the EH LPB 2ube Stereo Preamp. Boosts up your cleans but can be tweaked for a low-gain overdrive if desired. Kinda like the English Muffin with the tubes. OCDs are cool too. I like the Vox Cooltron pedals (true bypass, 12au7). Maybe the Brit Boost (got a treble boost and a full-range boost) if you want some Brian May to be with your hendrix too. There are tons of choices out there. ZVEX makes some nice fuzzes - Octane III is an octave fuzz that sounds really cool - like a Fender Blender. Fender Blenders are cool too. Hendrix used a lot of stuff, so there are a lot of choices for you. Good luck.
