lower watt speakers

Reckless Abandon

New member
I have a modded 50 watt jcm 800 combo. I cannot turn the volume past 3. I do get some power tube distortion since so much gain is hitting it. I do not get the fullness I would like. If I put a speaker that is ratted at 50 watts or less would I get a fuller sound?

thanks

NO, use an attenuator, like the one made by THD ...
Exactly, here is the logic.

You need at least 50 watts of powering handling in your speakers. If you have a 212 try a 112 but make sure it is rated 50 watts. If you don't have that power handling the speaker will blow. The 25 watt, 50 watt, 100 watt, etc rating just describes how much power it can handle.

The fuller sound comes from the power amp (the part that amplifies your sound after your preamp models it) when it being pushed hard. When it is pushing hard it also is sending lots of power to the speaker aka very loud. An attenuator goes between the power amp and speaker and lowers the volume before it hits the speaker, but you still have that power amp overdrive.

Re: lower watt speakers

My combo is a 1x12. I can never crank it. So I will never be putting out the full wattage. If I have my volume on 3 will a 50 watt speaker be ok and help?

I have a weber mass and I did not like the way my amp sounded. Maybe I did not keep it long enough but my tone became too dark.
