Hey guys.. just got a nice wine red, LP standard added to my collection with some active EMG's 81/85.. I like the tone because its something different but i already have a LP stacked with EMG's and thats enough for me... I was wondering what Seymours i could use to go passive but keep that style of tone????:smokin: let me know

Re: LP Standard MUST LOSE EMG's

I would recommend the Distortion or Custom bridge. They aren't as powerful IMO but both work well in Les Pauls. There is also the Invader but I would be weary in trying it because when I had one in the bridge of a Les Paul several years back it was very muddy. As for neck pickups, if you want an all arounder, the PG would work well. Also the Jazz b in the neck seems to be a good choice, though I haven't tried it myself.

Awsome man thanx.. i havent tried the distortion but people say that it is thin and sounds very compressed compared to the custom.. but glen drover uses it an his LP and it sounds sweet.. whats the deal with that?

Re: LP Standard MUST LOSE EMG's

I have never owned a Distortion, but have played them. It also depends on your amp. It sounded pretty full and thick through a JCM800. My personal favorite Les Paul bridge pickup is the Custom. The Custom has no where near the drive as say an EMG 81 but it can definately scream. If you are going to purchase the pickups new, you can take advantage of the 21 day exchange policy if you don't like your choice. What amp/amps will you play it through?

Re: LP Standard MUST LOSE EMG's

I say go with the Custom.. the custom in a Les paul is hard not to like its got a Zack Wylde'ish vibe in a way that i guess could make em EMG'ish, its my favorite hot roded paf and works great with a Les Paul. My friend has a Distortion in his Les Paul and i do sence its more compressed and i find it makes it soemwhat harsh sounding sometimes... the Custom is more versityle too IMO. Try a Custom/Jazz combo.. i think you cant go wrong with that

How is the 500T ? i havent tried it in LP before, but when i tried it in an explorer it seemed kinda muddy

Re: LP Standard MUST LOSE EMG's

i trhink the 500 t is smokin hot in a les paul its the stock bridge pick up in a les paul classic ,i liked the tone of my classic so much i bought the 500 t for my standard, its hot........but my ears are my ears all i can say is it work for me youll have to go check out a recent lp classic and try it out.

Re: LP Standard MUST LOSE EMG's

PATB1 .i will never be "tired" drom telling it ,but there is no better PU for harder stuff.Buy it ,and get surprized what Dynamics and power are in the same PU!And the Harmonics,...man you have to get one hahah!

Re: LP Standard MUST LOSE EMG's

There really is no Duncan to equate to the EMG81/85 until the Blackout comes out. A Custom or C5 is probably your best bet, the Custom will be meaner and have a bit more growl for metal etc. You can always boost your signal with the pick up booster and/or an overdrive pedal as well. You'll get more noise, and it won't be the same as an active pick up, but you'll still be driving your amp.

Re: LP Standard MUST LOSE EMG's

I've heard the Dimarzio Megadrive (if you can track one down) sounds alot like an EMG 81, but passive so therefore better hahahahha, just kidding. But I DID have a Zakk Wylde set in my Les Paul for years and i'm much happier now with the Custom in the bridge instead. Its crunchier and grittier, not all smooth and compressed sounding.

Re: LP Standard MUST LOSE EMG's

yeah i would say the distortion is closest, its way compressed compared to a custom but so is the emg 81. The custom is my favorite pickup to date.

Re: LP Standard MUST LOSE EMG's

The reason i went with SDs is because I heard an Invader in the bridge of an LP, and could not believe the smothness, remember I am strat guy. Depending on what you want, but you dont really need to go to 10 on the volume knob with invader, I bounce around 8, it does not get muddy, its splits wonderfully if you crank it up all the way up, great for tight, palm muted, single/pedal note riffs Helloween style.

Re: LP Standard MUST LOSE EMG's

You might consider a Classic / Heavy Metal Livewire set if you aren't determined to go passive. I just put those in my Les Paul and they sound smokin'. I've heard good things about the Dimarzio D Activators but have not played them.
