I have $600-700 to spend, and can and will buy used. I'm willing to change pickups (so long as it fits my budget) and I am in no rush to buy a guitar. I play traditional metal and stoner rock as well as classic rock. Think the Sword, Sabbath, Zepplein, Hendrix, and Maiden.

Scour the market for a used US Lonestar Strat. No modification needed.

Re: LP Studio vs HSS strat?

Based on your selections, a Strat wired correctly with the right pickup is what you need. You'll get more mileage for less dollars out of the Strat.

Re: LP Studio vs HSS strat?

I think Ace is right- a good Strat (easily found at that price) with the right pickups and you will be good to go.

Re: LP Studio vs HSS strat?

Les Paul Studio with Fluence Classics (you might want to look at other Fluence flavors or try my uber pup) wired for coil tap. Only down side is that a LP weighs a ton.

I think I'm going with a pre-2003 Lonestar Strat! They look awesome and have a pearly gates in the bridge, so they should fit my needs.

Technically, that's a Pearly Gates Plus. Different thing. Doesn't really matter, though. Sounds heaps better than whatever humbucker Fender puts in their modern Lone Stars.
