Lusting after Diezel VH-4

TwilightOdyssey

Darkness on the edge of Tone
Had rehearsal @ Ultrasound last night, and I got to play the Diezel VH-4 again, this time with my Strat (1979 hardtail, Joe Barden pups) ...

Man, that is a sweet amp! Cosmetically, it'a a bit of a wreck, because the layout is somewhat confusing on the front panel.

At first I was using channel 1 for clean and channel 4 for distortion, but at one point I switched to channel 3 + my Fulltone Full-Drive 2. It sounded more gainy, less 'modern' and was much smother/fatter. However, it was also noisy, so I went back to going straight into the head for the remainder ...

I also love the mute function on the footswitch, as well as the assignable FX loops, also controlled from the foot switch.

I have absolutely no room for this amp, nor would I necessarily want to buy one, but along with the VHT Pitbull 50, I would love to have this amp sitting around, just to have it.

Re: Lusting after Diezel VH-4

feel free to buy it and leave it at my house, i'll glady use it/store it for you since you don't have the room hahaha and i'm local so you can come pick it up whenever you want lol...i'm dying for a VH4 or a herbert...eventually i will own one or the other!!! what cab did you play it through?

Re: Lusting after Diezel VH-4

The cab was a straight Diezel 4x12, not on casters, so there was a bit of a bass hump from it sitting right on the floor ...

Any idea what kinda speakers? I'm working like a fiend to try and get one of these. I haven't bought anything guitar related for quite some time...

If it's good enough for Neal Schon...
I have issues with the 'modern' tone of channel 4; I still think the Rivera smokes it for old school metal tones.
The amp has an effortlessness that I can really get behind, tho, as well as a kind of natural elegance to the sound ... it's very seductive.
But, since my wife would kill me if I were to buy one, this is pure fantasy for me. :)

Re: Lusting after Diezel VH-4

I thought Matt Bellamy was using Marshall JCM 2000 stuff. It's not like his tone is a spectacular thing anyway. He gets really neat sounds, but his actual guitar amp tones are pretty standard.

Re: Lusting after Diezel VH-4

as far as I know, the VH4 is supposed to be a smokin' amp! Unfortunately no guitar store I know sells these boutique brands like Diezel and Bogner!! :yell:

I know Adam Jones of Tool uses one along with a Dual Rectifier.

That's one of the things I've found funny about Diezels.....

....I know of a couple of bands that use them (Korn, Metallica, Tool), but I don't know of any bands that only use them....they always seem to have other amps as well.

Re: Lusting after Diezel VH-4

matt belamy of muse, is in the marshall amps catalogue, he not only uses them, he endorses them. Marshalls i mean, though doesnt mean to say that he doesnt also use a diezel.

Re: Lusting after Diezel VH-4

Guitar player gave the herbert a very good review a little while back. Said it could nail the early VH tone, as well as do buzzsaw and nice cleans. Sounds very impressive.

Re: Lusting after Diezel VH-4

Do yourself a favor TO. Sell all the other stuff and you'll be very close to the price they usually sell for (which is around 3 grand). That type of versatility, power and reliability is what every serious guitarist needs.

The guitarist from Silverchair had a backline full of 'em when they opened for VH. The guy plays McNaught guitars, too. Very booteek rig.

Fortunately for my wallet, I agree that Diezel high gain is too modern for my taste.

mode four for cleans, VH-4 wired up to a MIDI rack for everything else

Cabwise, a MF 4x12 and a purple soldano 4x12 respectively

(this is the absolution tour, there was a complete backup rig of everything! :burnout: )

Disagree with me on british music? How dare you! Bah!

Hehe...

Matt Bellamy used to use a marshall, a soldano and... er... another one (think it was a laney, not sure.... will check when I get home), but for Absolution he took to using Deizels. I think his guitars sound really cool, and his playing is awesome (guitar and piano)... if you listen to the Origin of Symmetry, there are a lot of reked-out guitar sounds. For absolution he scaled back a bit, but then stuck a whole bliddy orchestra in instead. Go figure...

Anyway, anyone who disses matt bellamy gets a kick in the cajoolies from me. He's the first guitar hero of this century. So there. Mwa haah. :headbang:

Re: Lusting after Diezel VH-4

most of the OOS album was done with a ZVex Fuzz factory i think... lovely pedal.

it wasnt just the tone that made OOS wicked though, listen to citizen erased and try and work out whats going on chordwise ;)

edit: bit of trivia, dead star was done with a russian big muff through a bass amp, i read somewhere :burnout:
