Mag swap for CustomCustom in LP

I know the CustomCustom model is not a good choice for a LP but I do recall reading comments that changing the magnet makes it suitable. I have a PGn and a CC sitting unused so I thought I'd drop them into my Gibson LP Classic and use the stock pups from the Classic in a new Agile I have.

So, what is the preffered magnet that will make the CC useable in a LP? Was it the A5?

All "versions" of the Custom are usable in a LP, it depends on what your preferences are. Some people love the CC in a LP because it has good mids and rolled back highs, some like the A5 version for it's rolled back mids and strong low end. My preference is the regular Custom with the ceramic magnet as it is higher output but still has a vitage vibe to it. Your amp will factor into the equation as well.

Re: Mag swap for CustomCustom in LP

Depends of your music and your tastes. I play blues and classic rock & prefer a C5 in a LP (C8 in an SG). The LP's fat body usually fills in the mids with a C5, which may or may be enough with an SG. A few guys here like an A4, which is a like a milder version of a C8.

The stock CC (with an A2) can be too rounded on top in an LP, but fine in brighter woods. And of course these's the Custom, which is popular, but I personally don't like the tones of a ceramic bridge PU, as they're too bright & harsh for me.

Custom - Ceramic, plenty of output, well balanced, tight bass but more of a 'modern' sound
Custom Custom - A2, softer in the bass and highs, good for the softer end of classic rock without, in anyway, being weedy.
Custom 5 - A5, tight bass, screaming highs, bit scooped in the mids, possibly the most aggresive of the three, good for harder edged stuff.
Custom 8 - A8, not a production model but the aggression and tight bass of the five but smoother in the mids and more output.

TY, I understand now. The impression I had was that everytime a Custom model is mentioned in conjunction with an LP that it's always followed by a mention of magnet swap and more so with the CC model than any other. I'll try it stock first then look at an A5 and if that fails just buy a PGb or 59b.

I'd say that the bass is tighter with the A8.

Re: Mag swap for CustomCustom in LP

In a LP the ceramic is actually best IMHO.

The C5 is too dynamic and too hard to control. The ceramic sounds a little similar on light play but compresses as you play harder. The DC can be put to really good uses in LPs and Vs (think Michael Schenker).

The ceramic bridge pickup will give you cleans that sound cold, but then you do have an Alnico neck pickup, so I rather see this as a nice alternative, not a problem.

May i add something??

Custom 3 - A3 very reedy, weedy the most vintage sounding of the bunch - reminds me much of my Antiquities Bridge humbucer (go figure!)
