Mag swap for Pegasus 7 in 27" scale

So I've tried the stock configuration (A5) and a ceramic mag in the Pegasus 7 in a 26.5" scale. Now I have a 27" scale and am thinking of going the other way. I'm thinking of this because I remember the Bare Knuckle owner saying he'd recommend lower output pups for extended scales and lower tunings (A or Ab in my case) playing metal.

So I guess I'd like to try another alnico choice, but I don't know much about these other choices...A2, A3, A4...hey where's A1? haha

There's also the eq discussion, so feel free to add thoughts there.

Thanks!

What do you want to change about the current configuration?

Well it sounds a bit sterile, or compressed. So that's makes me think to go to less output, but maybe this is kinda generic thinking? I want the low end especially to be more lively.

Describing tone and feel is kinda weird, ain't it? Hopefully I somewhat described the situation.

The compressed feel can certainly happen when the output is too high for your needs. A magnet swap may help with the EQ, but the output may feel the same.

My impressions: I just replaced the A5 in my Pegasus 7 with ceramic and the output is noticeably higher. Still not quite as hot as the BKPs I'm used to (going by where I find the sweet spot on my input gain), which in turn are nowhere near as hot as an Invader. I've crushed the input of my amp with high output pickups before, but that's nowhere near happening here. Ceramic seems to give sharper pick attack, higher/crunchier highs, more "clarity" at higher preamp gain. A5 had a little more harmonic richness, felt slightly more compressed, maybe a bit more open in the bass because the mids aren't as prominent.

The differences are not negligible but I don't think the difference in scale length would make one or the other "better". It's possible the A5 would do a better job with the weird brightness of a longer scale guitar. But if you liked the change to ceramic on your 26.5 I don't see why you wouldn't like it on 27. Your input gain on the amp should be able to adjust for whatever either magnet puts out.

Hate to do the obvious, have you fiddled with the pickup height? I noticed the Pegasus is sensitive to that, along with pole piece height.. I have had luck living up the sound by matching the fretboard radius to pole height depending on what side of the neck needs clarity, etc. I play from A to Db and have found the Pegasus keeps up great with stock A5 and RCA5. Have yet to try UOA5 or A6.

A8 could be interesting depending on the body. I have had mixed results. Usually its too much, but in a Custom in a PRS CU24 it was a heavenly match.

Is the A8 kinda on the high output side like the stock A5 and the ceramic I've tried? Also I lowered the A5 and ceramic, but they still didn't do it for me.

I do have the desire to really try one of the lower output mags just to get an idea...I honestly don't think I've played an A2, 3, or 4 (or anything else I may be missing) in a humbucker. My particular combo may be kinda odd to make recommendations for though I suppose.
