Mag swap on PATB-3 saraceno

Hello mag swapper ^^
At home I got an old patb-3 Saraceno trembucker.
I didn't use it at the moment. Before I sell it I would like to test some different mag swap.... And so I need your opinion.

I have alnico 2, 3, 5 and 8 at home.
What could I expect tonaly with each of them in your opinion?

Thanks.

The stronger the magnet (5,8) the brighter the tone. Also the transients are faster.

The weaker magnets like A2 have a softer top end, and a spongier feel.

I like A5 or 8 for bridge pickups and A2 for the neck.

A3 could be cool and clear sounding in the PATB-3 wind, but get ready for noticeably lower output than the stock A5

I know Evan Skopp (well known Duncan employee in the past) had a '78 model turned into a Parallel Axis design by MJ in the Custom Shop. He said the result was pretty awesome. That pickup was similar to the PATB-3 and used an A2 mag.

If it were me, however, I'd be tempted to try the A8 in there!

Oh nice answer.
I think I will te Stan A3 in it. I think I get a low output warm vintage sound with it.

A8 could be interesting in this scooped pup. Could be very cool.

Considering I will put this pickup in ne neck, I think a2 or 3 could be a very great combination.
I love the patb-3 in neck position generally but I must confess I don't know how it could be sound comparatively with a2 and a3

Definitely try A3 in the neck, I bet it would sound great! A3 is an underrated magnet for sure

i like the patb3 with a2 in the bridge but i bet a3 would be nice in the neck

The PATB3 Saraceno is a bridge p'up. The polepiece spread won't match the string spread in the neck position.

The PATB1, OTOH... ;)

Food for thought.

Not made for doesn't mean it's not possible.
I got for years a guitar with these two pups... In bridge but in neck too.

Let me guess: you play music with a lot of gain, isn't?

You need to expand your over-generalized way of thinking about things.

FYI, many bridge pickups work great in the neck (regardless of gain) and many modern guitars can easily use a trem-spaced pickup in the neck without issue.

No not necessarily.
I play metal but not with such a pup.
I love blues and jazz too
Ok. When using the PATB3 in the neck position, did you ever notice an unevenness in output volume between strings?

Re: Mag swap on PATB-3 saraceno

the patb pups seem to spread the magnetic field fairly evenly across the pup, or at least more so than a typical bucker

Re: Mag swap on PATB-3 saraceno

No absolutely nothing.
My experience resulted on a bit weak 4th, a pretty loud 3rd and a pretty weak 1st. That was with a 11-52 XL set, on my Mayones Maestro. Clean setting on a Blackface vintage Twinreverb, arpeggio-playing. Had to add a compressor to the track, as the imbalance was too noticeable to make the cut.
