Magnet question - compatibility between p90 and humbucker magnets

Are magnets the same size in p90s as in humbuckers?

I have a C-5 that I want to be a Custom, and a P90 Custom 3 neck that's far too compressed. If I can swap the A5 for one of the ceramic mags from the p90 then that'd save me needing to buy a magnet.

Also I assume I can use a mix of magnets in the p90? What would an a5/ceramic combo sound like if I did?

Thanks in advance for any replies.

Re: Magnet question - compatibility between p90 and humbucker magnets

AFAIK, they are the same size. they are in my phat cat 90-style pickup. blueman's always talking about swapping magnets, and they only sell one size of bar magnet:scratchch

you'd probably get a drop in output with a little less mids and aggression from the a5/C combo compared to the stock C/C magnet combo.

The size could slightly differ between Humbuckers and P90, but it should fit. I think Duncan only uses one size.

for the most part they´re intercahangeable. Some oddball PUs cause problems, but as a rule they´re the same mags.

Thanks guys. Both pickups are Duncans so hopefully all will go well.

You could so al kinds of magnet combinations to shape your tone, any alnico or ceramic pair, be creative. This is pretty much new territory.

Re: Magnet question - compatibility between p90 and humbucker magnets

Duncan seems to use the 50's M55 size magnet in most of the alnico stuff; 2.5 x 0.5 x .125 inches. Will fit in HB or P90...
