Magnet Swap in a DP200 (Morse pup)

DP200

Ceramic magnet.

DC Res 9.94kOhms

Output 450 mV

Its really bright and has relatively little bass. It is a custom color for the EBMM SMY2D guitar, and the color isn't available for any other pups. I would like to keep the matching purple pups as a set in the guitar, but I just hate the sound of the bridge pup.

I have a vintage pup in it now. A Rockfield with an Alnico II magnet and it sounds pretty good.

I wanted to ask the experts though, how the stock pup with the above specs would sound with an Alnico II or V magnet in it.

Thanks

As far as i can remember they are "air" modded pickups and you may need metal spacer while modifying. If i'm wrong and there is a metal spacer in your humbucker, you may go for trial & error :)

I believe that the neck one is air modded, not the bridge.

As for swapping the magnet, putting in an A5 or A2 would darken it up, but I'm pretty sure that Dimarzio glues the magnets into the pickups. You may be better off finding another Dimarzio pickup more suited for the sound that you want. There's a seller on E-Bay that keeps just about every Dimarzio in every color in stock. If your guitar is bright sounding, the Tone Zone would probably even that out.

(I've got the Steve Morse bridge in a basswood Strat and it's absolutely KILLER for me. Not bright at all.)

You can get the magnet out easy enough by sliding a pocket knife (BE CAREFUL) between the baseplate and magnet and gently twisting. Once the mag is loose the glue comes off pretty easily. You will need a spacer under the magnet because I believe the Morse has the big ceramic and the longer pole screws.

I would try it, the Morse isn't a popular pickup and I see almost everyone who buys one of his sig guitars takes them out straight away, so I doubt many people would be lining up to buy it if you try selling it. You've got nothing to lose, it might be awesome.

I'm selling all of my Dimarzios EXCEPT for the Steve Morse bridge and Steve's Special. They're secret weapons. You just have to have them in the right guitar.

Yes as posted already,I've experienced the glued in magnets on Dimarzios...You can work the magnet out,but it is a PITA! Nerve wracking also!

Sorry about that John , LOL. I swapped a mag in a DMZ Mo Joe and the A5 in there came right out but I`d bet the big Ceramics are glued in.

Re: Magnet Swap in a DP200 (Morse pup)

Thanks for the tips. I didn't know they glue them or the possibility they are air modded.

I did try a tz in its just too much bass. I think it's the chambered poplar making it resonate way too much. Probably why they only have such a low resistance pup and also why my vintage puP sounds good

As far as custom colors this is a color only available on these guitars. Heh I already thought about that and contacted them a while back.

I did a magnet awap on a newer VPAF DMZ that was glued in...Maybe a Fred also? Someone sent me a DMZ for a magnet swap and it too was glued in..Could be that the ceramic on the one was glued in? Hard to remember now... ;o) I do remember breaking stuff into peices,so probably the ceramic.
