magnet swap with Epi pup or D.Designed?

Hey all. I want to try an A5 magnet in my Custom Custom, which is stock with an A2. I find the bass a little too open. I've never done a magnet swap so I figure I should try it and change it so a Custom.

I have a few Epi pup's and Duncan Designed pup's sitting around. Would the magnet in those be useful or are they considered lower quality than what I'd find in SD pups? If so, I'll buy one.

Thanks.

If you've got the Duncan Designed HB102 set, those are A5s. The HB103 set has Ceramics. (Either magnet would probably get your CC sounding better.) The HB102 magnet would make it a Custom 5. The HB103n magnet would make it a Custom. (The HB103b has an extra thick magnet, which would give you a Custom +.... :D )

I'm not familiar with the ceramic magnet in those pickups but some are thicker than the standard
1/8" thick magnet & you will need to make a shim to go under your keeper & a bigger spacer

That's great information. I have 4 Duncan Designed pickups (2 neck, 2 bridge). Hopefully they're marked underneath what they are.

Thanks. If it doesn't fit I image I'll just use the A5.

there is a easy way to tell the difference between ceramic & alnico
the alnico is a conductor or electricity just use a multimeter if you cant tell by looking at it alnico looks like metal ceramic's are generally black

The HB103b has a thicker magnet and shims, so you can always steal those. ;)

I'm pretty sure the HB103n has a standard ceramic magnet. (I haven't popped one of those yet.)

Hay Dru, I have an off topic question. If you are in N.B. what gives with the N.S. Flag ?

I don't think the ceramic magnets in those p'ups are the THICKER type... at least they weren't so in mine.

The 103n is a very good sounding p'up if you put an A2 or A4 magnet in it... even A5 will sound good, just not as good as the other two.

I didn't like the HB103b, so I've sent it to Zhang and had it rewound with his Pagey2 specs, adding an A8 and it's a KILLER p'up. This particular set (A4 HB103n/A8 Pagey2) lives in my Mayones Maestro.

HTH,

no THE ROCK is just the bigger stone to the north east of it LOL

Most people usually say Newfoundland is EAST, never heard them say North East . You must be a Townie to be that smart.:friday::friday::cool2::scratchch

Townie? Haven't heard that sociological terminology since my Cape Cod days...

They don't say that kinda thing out here in North Hollyrood. That's why I haven't heard it since my Cape Cod days ('79-'88).
