Magnet swaps for my Seths?

I'm looking to tighten up the bass on the neck pickup, and get a little more aggression/grind out of the bridge.

I'd like to try magnet swaps before going for another set of pups.

Thoughts, opinions?

UOA5 for neck, A5 bridge?

Haven't tried them in Seths but that would be my first thought based on what you said.

UOA5 sounds like a good idea for the neck. I have A3 in mine and really like it.

I really recommend these alnico spacers for the bridge since they fill out the sound and you can mix mags. You could do all A5 or maybe A4 and A5.

Those are ceramic magnets. Alnico magnets can’t be made that narrow.

Just be aware that putting the same poles facing an alnico (which is how you use flanking magnets) can demagnetize the alnico.

^ They have A2,4,5, and ceramic. I wouldn't recommend ceramic unless you want to really change the voicing of the pup.

Have you tried adjusting the height of your Seth's? I think you could achieve your goals by tilting the neck on the low strings. Raise the bridge for a bit of power boost. If you really want change magnets, I would go Alnico 4 here.

The Seths are one of the very best p'ups to use as a mag swap platform, as it sounds great with any Alnico magnet there is, depending on the desired tonal task ahead.

So, just go for it. Just remember to let enough time for the new magnetic field to rightfully shape before trying other magnet. This "settling-in" time varies from a just couple of days sharp for an A8 mag to at least a week (I favor two weeks) to even a whole month for A3s.

Another thing is be aware of, and can't stress it enough, is the importance of finding the "sweet spot", meaning the "right" distance from the p'up to the strings, and I'd like to add to find the right polepiece stagger.

This ensure the desired evenness of output between the strings, depending on the string set and the neck's radius, The stagger varies with the position each p'up is set in the guitar, being the neck p'up the greatest and the bridge one almost flat. The depicted is a real-life example of how it looks on a neck p'up, with a D'Addario EXL 116 (11-52) string set and a 12" radius Gibson neck.

Re: Magnet swaps for my Seths?

For your requirements I would start with A4 in neck and A8 in the bridge

Before I read any of the replies, this is what I was going to suggest.

Certainly try adjusting the pup heights and angles first, and then individual pole piece adjustments for fine tuning. But I think you probably will want to end up with the mag swaps.

Re: Magnet swaps for my Seths?

You can also get a spare set of fillister screws and cut them to be flush with the baseplate. That'll tighten up the sound some on the neck pickup.
