Magnet swaps?

With all the talk of magnet swaps on here, is there a how-to guide somewhere? I'd like to see how it's done before I start considering it.

Re: Magnet swaps?

i'm surprised someone who can't find info on mag swaps can find this forum

Re: Magnet swaps?

Thanks for the help SRS and MC. Looks pretty easy (except having to re-pot, which is a pain).

Re: Magnet swaps?

I have never repotted, and with good results. Of course, I usually don't have covered pickups, either. I have heard of people doing this with a hairdryer, with good results.

My only problem with re-potting is I don't really have the right equipment. I did it with an electric skillet and had a hard time getting the wax hot enough, but I finally got it done. I don't have a specific need yet for changing magnets, other than I'm not sure I like the A5 in my '59 in the neck, but I'm not sure it's not easier to just sell it and buy a used A2 to swap it with.

Re: Magnet swaps?

i heat the bottom of the baseplate with the solder iron (40W) to get the wax flowing; a few seconds at either end, and in the middle will do the trick

I have tried a a-5 in the alnico 2 pro, but not a-2 in the 59. (Dr ad swears by the 592) (I will have to try this). Pearly gates n is very nice, also!

Re: Magnet swaps?

i really want a pearly set, i just don't want to pay for one...

i quite liked the stock 59n clean but it was too much when dirty; A2 took care of that. i find the A2 '59n to sound more slash than the A2P, but that's just my hands i guess.

i made a hybrid out of them too but didn't really dig it.

A2 59n is now my fave neck pickup ever. i found the A5P very interesting too, but had already been visited by awesomeness in the form of the A2 59n.
