Magnetic poles and Bar magnets output

Magnetic poles have by far the strongest magnetism. They don't necessarily make a pickup louder than a bar magnet under steel poles, because this second recipe increases the inductance, and more inductance makes a same coil darker with a higher output. Both structures also imply differents Q factors (resonant peaks with different shapes), different harmonics, a different dynamics. IOW: yes, the two recipes do sound different. :-)

NOTE - Generalizations are discussible because generally, a pickup design is adapted to the kind of "magnetic circuit" involved.
And while I'm at it: pickups with steel poles have their wire wound around plastic bobbins. Pickups with rod magnets have their wire most often wound directly on the magnets. This difference also affects output and sound, FWIW.
