Magnetic poles vs Bar magnets?

Re: Magnetic poles vs Bar magnets?

Indeed.

Polepiece magnets are quite biting in tone.....they have a sizzle or sting you just cannot get from a bar mag + polepieces. The Wide Range humbucker like on original 70's Teles is a prime example of a humbucker like that. Then take a p90 and change it to pole mags and you have a tonal shift to something like an overwound strat pickup.

Oh yeah! The Stag Mag is a humbucker designed like 2 singles slammed together. It splits wonderfully, but when both coils are on, it doesn't sound like a traditional humbucker. Either does the WRHs out there. Everything, and I mean everything, in a pickup affects the sound. Change one thing and everything changes. Changing the magnet from bar to poles is about as radical as you can get.
