mahogany cabinets?

the other guitarist in my band just bought an empty 4x12 for $125. apparently it was built 10 or so years ago by some fella that makes furniture. it's built to look like a road case, it's got the metal corners and edges, metal grille, and it even has a front panel that pops on and off like a rack. very solid piece of gear, it could definitely take a beating and a half on the road. pretty cool IMO.
but anyways, when we took it apart to load it up with a set of vintage 30's, we discovered that the cabinet was built with what appears to be 9-ply mahogany.

anyone ever hear of a mahogany cabinet? it sounds really good though, it has a lot more punch and more of a pronounced low/low mid range than any other V30 cabinet i've heard. can't wait to hear it after a few loud practice sessions, once those speakers get a little bit of break-in time :D

Re: mahogany cabinets?

only time i've heard of something similar to that is a krank cab, which people pretty much hate. But theres aren't ply, they're solid wood

but if it works, hell, rock it till it dies

Re: mahogany cabinets?

the Krank cabs are made of Poplar.

mahagony seems like it would be great for a cab. might just wiegh a bit.
