Mahogany Superstrat DONE: FRED + Duncan Jazz - SWEET!

Just to comment, I finished my superstrat project:
USACG mahogany body, mahogany neck, Pao Ferro board.
Wilkinson V110 bridge, Sperzels, all gold HW, very nice looker.
Vol-Vol-Tone ctrls in a PRS type setup, pull tone for coil split.

I am a HAPPY MAN. For one, it's MY neck (10" radius, 6105s) and a pair of very versatile & sweet pickups. I did not go with the PAF Pro neck Pup - tried it, liked it, tried the Jazz neck and was BLOWN AWAY. What a great pickup (SD Jazz) - tone for days....

It is TOO DAMN BAD the whole "10K pickup special order" thing happened AFTER I ordered my FRED! ...Anyway, I like the Fred a lot, it does it all and does it well for under $60.

Through my fender deluxe clone I've got big clean bass (the F-spaced FRED I got has more bass than the one in the test axe), smooth mids - none of the 'honk' of the JB I had originally planned. Highs are a bit more than I expected - the Wilkinson is janglier sounding than the TOM on the test axe...however, I found if I just roll the volume off a hair the FRED is a bit smoother (probably overdriving the first tube stage in my amp).

Under high gain the FRED is wierdly insane...whereas the JB is compresed and thus predicatable, the FRED does some wild stuff...kind of like the PATB3 I tried in that respect. I'm gonna have to do some clips - the combination of wood, bridge & pickup is just freaky cool.

Split, the FRED is not as full sounding as the JB, I have to admit that, but it is nonetheless usable. Pleanty of bass, highs are OK but it is a bit light in the mids. I won't be trashing my old strat (3 A2Pro singles in that) but for a lighter feel it does the trick.

For those wondering, if a Dimarzio & a Duncan can play well together, absolutely, YES, split they humcancel when selected together (I'll have a diagram on my website - see signature). Together they sound just great - woodiness of the jazz with some of the presence of the Fred gives a great tone for edgier jazz, or a fuller R&R rythm tone.

So, I'm in hog heaven - got a guitar that fits me to a 'T', with some cool pickups. Thanks to all for their comments & info on the site here.
