making a line out...?

is it possible to make a low-level output jack on an amp by wiring a jack that is in series with a high level resistor and in parallel with the speaker out jacks? it seems like it's done this way on an old bass head i have, but i'm not sure if it'll just work for anything. it makes sense to me, because if it was a high enough resistance in parallel, wouldn't the amp see essentially the same load as the speakers and not be damaged?

What you want to do is fairly common. But it isn't done exactly as you describe. Do a Google search for "speaker to line level" and you'll see over 11 million pages on this. The first one, at speaker_to_line.html answers the question fairly well.
