similar woods to the EBMM EVH/Axis. and I believe John Suhr calls that combo the holy grail of tone.

from my own experience with my EBMM Axis, I can comment on what I've tried. of course, the DiMarzios that came with it are nice. I tried a Aldrich bridge and it was a little dull. I've had a DiMarzio AT-1 in the bridge for a while and I'm liking that a lot. I've also had the DiMarzio HFH and LiquiFire in the neck and those work out very well for neck position. granted, we might not be chasing the same hard rock tones or using the same gear. and unfortunately, my experience with that wood is limited to that guitar and that guitar will not allow a Duncan mounting leg in there without altering the feet.

might not be a ton of help, but thought I'd take a swing.

be careful with what uOpt says... he doesn't think the Hot Rail sounds like the Invader! ;)

In all seriousness, I think basswood, with and without maple veneer (it's not a crafted cap so it doesn't do much) is pretty ideal to make idiots like me be able to make a guitar "sing" in a reasonably pleasant voice and be quite versatile. Plus you can lie to your buddies and say you have a really light alder guitar, somehow that's a status symbol. My favorite pickup combination in basswood is 1x Pearly Gator in the bridge and 2x the original Antiquity for Strat. Seymour knew what he was doing when he made them.

That Lukather sounds great, too.

I know Guthrie Govan is currently using a Charvel with that wood combo but I don't know much about the pups except that they are a custom wind made from Fender and that he wanted "Honest" sounding pups so i'm guessing they are low out put.

Re: maple cap / basswood

Yeah Suhr and others prefer it to mahogany/maple cap. Lighter weight too. I'd suggest the Black Winters actually, seeing how nasty and versatile they apparently are. Damn I need to get a hold of some.
