Maple Neck/ Rosewood FB LP anybody?

I saw this axe used the other day at GC. Unusual for a Les Paul to have a maple neck with a rosewood fingerboard. It also had a sweet looking flame maple top on it. All the maple was finished natural + gold hardware.

The thing had the sweetest tone ever! It kicked the old Santana Yamaha SBG in the ever-lovin ars!

How common are these guitars? This one was about $1900 US used!

No pic? No link?

I'm gonna assume its the LP Studio Plus? I checked it out at GC before. It looks nice, except for the gold. Too much if you ask me. Definetly hollowed out some. It was as light as a feather.

I had a Norlin-era '78 Les Paul Standard that had a maple neck + rosewood board 'way back when. Mine was a normal goldtop with chrome hardware.

Back in the '70's everybody got all in a bunch when they thought the world's supply of mahogany was running out. Guitar manufacturers, especially Gibson, started doing all sorts of crazy things, like putting maple necks on Les Pauls, and making those walnut "The Paul" things.

The goldtop had a maple neck, but the burst had mahogany. Built in the same year, so go figure:

Of course, 30 years later, guys like Zakk Wylde make their name playing these oddball axes, and Gibson has to keep making them.

My old 81 Standard- one piece body, 3 piece top, 3 piece maple neck:

You can see the maple at the heel and at the headstock.

my 76 LP Deluxe has a 3 piece maple neck... 5 piece if you include the wings for the headstock!
