Marshall 1960A speaker ohms

In a typical Marshall 1960 cabinet, you've got three selections: 4 ohm mono, 16 ohm mono and 8 ohm stereo. What are the individual speaker ohms? Here's why--I picked up one of those brass logo, blue tolex anniversary cabs last night. I just saw something on the Marshall site (but can't find it now) that those cabs came with the G12t-75 speakers, but they were 4 ohm speakers. I don't know much about wiring up a cab, but I thought to do the above you needed 16 ohm speakers, which this cabinet has.

I don't want to blow a transformer so is that blurb on the Marshall site wrong?

Re: Marshall 1960A speaker ohms

Usually, Marshall uses 16-ohm drivers. With those your can get any of the three options you listed. Problem is, you could get the same three options with 4-ohm drivers.

I don't know if Marshall put something special in those cabs or not, but it seems unlikely. 4-ohm drivers are a lot less common than 8 or 16.

Re: Marshall 1960A speaker ohms

I looked up a Marshall wiring diagram for the regular 1960a cab, which this really is, and the wiring is correct with the 16 ohm speakers. I think the site I saw was wrong.

1960A's use 16 Ohm speakers.

You can get all those ohmages from a set of 4 4 Ohm speakers?

Re: Marshall 1960A speaker ohms

Sure.
(4) 4-ohm in series gives 16 ohms
Two pairs of (2) 4-ohm in series gives 8 ohms stereo
(4) 4-ohm in series/parallel gives 4 ohms

Not always! My 1960A has 8 ohm speakers and it's an 8 ohm cab (cab was made in 1985)

Never opened my JCM900 1960A (made in 1999), are those 16 ohm? Metal is best when 4X12 is set to 16, right ?

Yeah, they should be 16 ohm..

I set my JCM 800 head at 8 ohms to match my cab, and well the metal tones coming out of it are pretty darn good! (Click on myspace link in my sig to hear the metal tones out of my Marshall amp)
