Marshall DSL, TSL or a Mesa Dual Rectifier?

Re: Marshall DSL, TSL or a Mesa Dual Rectifier?

I say go with the DSL..

Jeff i thought you were all over wanting one of those traditional mesa cabs with V30s? Had another gear revelation did you? :laugh2:

if price is a concern, the DSL 50 satisfies a lot of tastes.. but +1 to the guys throwing other amps into the pot!

if you're looking at a dual rec, have you considered a peavey 5150/6505?

if you're looking at a newer marshall, have you looked at used earlier JCM era amps? 800s, 900s, pick 3 of your favourite album tones, and see where they take you.. the TSLs/DSLs are good, yeah - but you might find exactly what you want with a JCM 900 or something?

i have considered it. ive played through a 6505+ and it sounds great. its just something im drawn to about marshall sound and the mesa heaviness thats all. i think i might be leaning towards the dual rectifier personally. ive heard a lot of good things so far about it and ive been doing some research. when i played it i was also blown away by the sound. i buy everything based on the gut instinct and how well it sounds to me, and by far this is one of the hardest choices ive had to make.

i feel your pain man :laugh2:

best two things you can trust is your own gear and your ears. what sounds awesome through the closest thing you can find in the store can sound like ass through your own rig!

and if you decide to buy based on playing through one in a shop, make sure you walk out with the one you playtested! shops will do that if one amp comes through as particularly good - give you an out-the box one that might sound slightly different..

neither, get a genz benz el diablo 100, it easily blows marshall and mesa away

I played some Genz Benz stuff and it wouldn't blow my nose.

As far as Mesa or Marshall, I think the answer depends on what tones you like. They sound very different. I've never heard a Mesa sound like a Marshall and Vice Versa.

I've owned stuff from both companies. Personally, I like Marshalls, because I like the mid range chunk they get. No other amp gets it like a Marshall (or clone). Think Black Crowes, Slayer, Cream, Hendrix, GNR.

Mesas do have that Chug that nothing else gets. Very bassy thick tones. Think Godsmack, Creed, Santana.

As far as the DSL or TSL? I've had a TSL head that I bought used and it didn't switch channels quietly (it was kinda wierd). I returned it to the store. I have a DSL which is great and very usable especially if you have low output pups and use your volume/tone knobs.

I like both, but prefer the Marshall because I like Marshall sounds.

I had to chime in since I spent today playing a Silver Jubilee and a Dual rec at a rehearsal.

If you don't need balls out nastiness - MARSHALL ALL THE WAY, the DSL is sweet, and warm. The Mesa never gets brown. Great saturation, but never lets you back off and sound gorgeous

I wouldn't agree with that but the chug on a Mesa is pretty tough to beat. I like the idea of a Mesa with el34s, while I haven't tried it it seems like the amber channel (ch.2) would probably benefit from it- with the 6l6's I only like the red channel (ch.3).
