Marshall DSL5C for recording

Hi,

I am about to return the Blackstar ht5 because I just didn't like the tone.(I use) I think about getting the Marshall DSL5C combo instead. Anyone recommend it over blackstar? I plan to use its effects send to audio interface for recording using redwirez cab IR's and mainly for leads.

Or do you say no amp will sound really good with headphones and cab IR's as long as I dont crank it and don't run it into a real 4x12 cab.

Re: Marshall DSL5C for recording

It's not recommended to use "FX-send" to connect to an interface (in general, nothing to do with my personal preference).

FX loops are positioned between the pre amp and the power amp.
So basically you would be using the pre amp to drive a speaker cabinet.
If that would work, why make an amp with a power section at all?

Unless you have a HUUUUUGE budget, I wouldn't recommend it.
It can seriously damage your equipment

Re: Marshall DSL5C for recording

Depends on the loop design.

My Studio 2 has level controls and the fx loop is post-power-stage so it can be used specifically for the purpose of slaving the amp or running it parallel to an effects rig or interface. It ALSO has a recording out out post-power stage ... Versatile amp!

My MESA dual rec has a similar option as well.

For the Marshall, I would sooner use the speaker out, however, to retain the full tone of the amp, and then run it through a Hot Plate ... Then run the line out from the Hot Plate. However, the extra cost could probably net you an amp w an emulated or dedicated line out.

Is there a reason you are set on a Marshall? There are many amps out there that will do what you want. Just add a 'Marshall amp in a box' pedal in front of it ...

I don't think you understand what he's doing. As long as he has a load (or the amp on standby, although I recommend having a load anyway), what he's doing is just fine, and is actually the correct way to go for near-silent recording.

A cabinet IR will NEVER sound like a roaring 4x12. Neither does any recorded music that you listen to. Cabinets are mic'd up for recording, and that's the sound you get with IRs.

For the original poster - are you using a power amp sim? Sometimes that's the missing link.

Download TPA-1 and put that before your cab plugin. Keep trying different IRs too. What you *think* you want may be completely wrong. Listen with your ears, not with your eyes. :D
