Marshall handles question

Replacing my beat up plastic handles on my MF400A cab for some of the new shiny metal ones. Took off the old ones and lined up the new ones. They are close but not quite a drop in fit. Barely too wide. That's easy, just ream it out a tad.

Bigger issue is they are just barely not big enough top to bottom. I can either have all the screws except the center bottom lineup or center top depending on how you shift it

I don't need it to look pretty but I would like it to have all the screws attached. I can add in some wood some how but not sure the best way. Find a piece of scrap, cut to size and glue it in?

Re: Marshall handles question

are you handy with metal? Why not build an adaptor plate? using like 3/16th inch plate cut it so it fits over the existing edge. Then cut the square in the center of the plate to match your handle just make sure that you have an overlap between the plate and the flange on the handle that doesnt line up. That way you can just run longer rivets through the handle and the plate into the wood on the edges that do line up then where it doesnt use bolts to attach the handle to the plate then use rivets for the plate to the wood

Does that make sense?

You might be able to do it out of wood but i would want any patches you glue in to be reinforced on the back. If you move the cab around the handles can kinda take a beating. Maybe patches made of good plywood glued in with like GM panel adhesive than on the backside glue a strap of 1/8th inch veneer just to give it all some support.

Re: Marshall handles question

I would drill it and glue a wood dowel in. Then go ahead and put the new screw where ever you want. If using a hard wood dowel and proper wood glue, it should be as strong as before and look just as pretty.

Re: Marshall handles question

I'm not handy with metal but a dowel makes sense to me

It will screwed in a bunch of places. The one screw not making contact with wood is not going to do much more for support or stability. I just want a screw in there and something for the tolex to wrap around

Re: Marshall handles question

You're probably joking but that's actually my goal. To learn and problem solve and enjoy it.

Re: Marshall handles question

when lifting the cab, the weight will pull at the bottom more than the top

you are recovering it, right

find a piece of plywood the same thickness, cut to rough shape
fit in hole, then screw/glue another slightly larger piece inside
the patch wont show on the inside

Thanks! Basically what I was thinking
