i own an early 80's 2204.... great for that ACDC type overdive... add a pedal for solos and harder edge stuff..... Could do with a slight bit more low end but still pretty good..

But for myself i want a 2000 series soon.... TSL, DSL not sure which... most likely a 50 watter..

Another vote for a 2204.:D 50 watts of pure Rock N' Roll tone.:smokin:

I like the jcm900 mark III if you need a little more gain and are looking for a decent price used.

sorry for my ignorance but whats JTM?

you mean JMP.... i think he means the 70's marshall's the JMP 50 watt 2204 from the mid-late 70's..... i could be wrong but that is my guess...

i always tought 2204/2203's were jcm800's

so did i until i started coming to this site... turns out late 70's Marshalls before the 800 series were also known as the 2204 and 2203

At least I'm not the only one who was confused about this! Check out these two schematics, both labelled "2204":

JCM 800

JMP

Both are 50W master volume Marshalls, but the preamp circuits are very different. The JCM800 preamp is the one I've seen referred to as the "icon". With the "High" input, there are three gain stages before the cathode follower. The JMP circuit only has two gain stages, with the first selected by the "High" or "Low" input.

Re: marshall JCM800 2203/04, JCM900 mk 6l6, or JCM2000 DSL?

I've seen that schematic before, and think it's a very early circut, from around 1975. I have a copy of a 2203 schematic dated Nov 1976 that is as the JCM 800 schematics. However, the 50 watt MV circut from that early period is still like that lower gain version in the schematics. The Schematic may not match how the amp's were actually wired either. I'm not sure when exactly the 50 watt Master Volumes became like the 100 watt Master Volumes, and the later JCM 800's Master Volumes, but I'm pretty sure it was prior to introduction of the JCM800 models.

When the JCM800 came out in 1981 the changes were cosmetic, but the guts and the tone remained the same. Rose Morris (distributors) held a large inventory of JMP Marshalls, and Marshall had just terminated their contract with Rose Morris. Marshall came out with the JCM800 look, and that made the RM inventory obsolete. Eveybody wanted to buy the newer JCM800 looking amps through Marshall's new distribution network instead of the older looking RM inventory. It actually kept Marshall in bussiness at the time.

All 2204's that I've seen are electronically about the same regardless, if it's got the JMP or the JCM800 look. JCM800 is really a look, not a specific sound.

The real gainy JCM800's that people associate with 80's metal are probably the 2205/2210 JCM800 models, not the 2204 JCM800 models. Those have comparitively a lot of distortion at any volume. You usually have to use an overdrive/distortion device on an unmodded 2203/2204, to do metal at a reasonable volume.

I really like the DSL's. The cleans and distortions are both amazing. Someday I will be getting one myself. :)

Re: marshall JCM800 2203/04, JCM900 mk 6l6, or JCM2000 DSL?

I had a 2203. Great sounding head, but needs modification or a boost pedal. Not much gain. I have a DSL 100, sounds great and has more than enough gain without a boost. I hate using pedals. Always thought the 900's were to preamp/buzzy.

They made JTMs also. The JTM45, JTM45/100 were the heads that were constructed like the Bluesbreaker combo. They had 5881 tubes and a GZ-34 tube rectifier. The JTM45/100 was the 100 watt version with two output trannies and double the power tubes. These have been reissued. Also in the 90's they made the JTM30 and JTM60 combos (also 5881 tubes) which were not well received. They didn't last long in the lineup.
FYI ..... JTM stood for Jim & Terry (son) Marshall. JMP stood for Jim Marshall Products. JCM800 was from his car license plate and JVM stands for Jim & Vicky (daughter) Marshall.

Re: marshall JCM800 2203/04, JCM900 mk 6l6, or JCM2000 DSL?

Well .... I would say don't get the DSL. I had it for two years of active giging and rehearsing. It really does not like pedals and I had a really tough time with the loop. And if you really into Slash thing, wasn't his tone defined by the Jubilee?
