Re: Marshall JCM800 vs VintageModern

800 is always a good bet, but the VM has more vintage tone. So for metal 800 and VM for rock and more classic metal tones.

The trebley tone is due to the utoob compression, thus the lows and low mids don't get through :(

Re: Marshall JCM800 vs VintageModern

With those settings in the video, I preferred the 800. The VM needed a bit less treble and more mid.

Re: Marshall JCM800 vs VintageModern

forget the video i don't even need to watch it to know i'd take the 800 hands down. the VM just doesn't do it for me.

having owned both, i can definitely say i prefer the jcm800. the vm is nice but in my band situation it did NOT cut it.

I hear you, but many other amps sound anything from 'Good' to 'GREAT' on Utoob :scratchch

Re: Marshall JCM800 vs VintageModern

I also had a vintage modern before my JCM800. I got the VM because I read it could easily do the 800 sound, heavier, and lighter sounds. So I was all for it. Then I bought one, and it SUCKED ! Not anything close to an 800. The 800 was the sound I had wanted pretty much since the beginning, so when I got my 800 it was bitter sweet. I personally didn't like a single thing with the VM, but alot of guys like it. I would def. go 800 for me though.

Re: Marshall JCM800 vs VintageModern

A 2 channel 800, witch scooped mids and a distortion pedal in front isn't exactly a good representation of such a killer amp...

Most of the time, i'll take the JCM...

Yeh alot of people blame youtube compression but stuff tends to sound alright in HQ these days so it more has to do with bad micing and settings.

Very true !
Most punters just use a crappy $500.00 cam-corder w the built in mic to record, or worst, use an iPhone or simmilar rubbish :banghead:

VM:cool2:

I like the 800, but they tend to be a bit too bright for me. The VM comes closer to the classic late-'60's Marshall tone IMO.

That is what i think/hear too, but not many people tend to agree w me on this topic !
UK GUITARIST mag did a great job of show casing the amp on their CD a year or so ago.
Got massive bass out of it, w. a "non-earbleeding" top-end.

I really want to hear this amp going through an over size 4X12 w Emi Swamp Thangs, and/or a 4X10 w Emi Delta Demons !

If you want a hot rodded VM, FJA does a good job.
Not my style of playing, but good sounds non the less.

James,

I tried one about a year ago at Guitar Center. 50W head through a 4X12 bottom (Marshall). It was a bit muddy at first, but once you monkey with the control (body and detail knobs especially) it sounded awesome. Great old Marshall tone. Worth a look for sure. I agree the Emi speakers or even Warehouse speakers would improve the sound
