Marshall JTM30 used as a recording preamp!

Guys,

I've tried something new to me. I have used my Marshall JTM30 (which I kinda like, I mean it's not a to die for amp, still solid and likable) as a recording preamp. I've used its FX out to feed into my soundcard, and then I've used cab sim IR&VST (RedWirez's 5E3 cab sim). The delay is from the pedal (MXR Carbon Copy) and there are no other reverb and delay effects. It's sorta dry. Just a tough of comp and eq. Below is the pic of the gear. But more importantly, here is how it sounds:

Pedals:

Amp:

It looks like a promising method for "silent" recording (at night, when everybody is asleep and all).

Best,

B

Sounds pretty cool! But that amp is best when cranked up, that's really where it shines (and why I don't always plug into mine). Out of all my OD pedals, mine only plays nice with the mxr classic OD.

Thanks for chiming in.

I agree, it sound really good cranked up. But still the whole idea was this "silent" recording thing, using the JTM30 as a "preamp" you know...

It's all good but I liked the tone that starts around 3:53 to 4:30 which is a great neck pickup sound.

It's usually a good idea to fully utilize everything you already own, rather than twitching over new stuff.

The Marshall preamp has a very specific sound that you can't always get from other brands. You may as well use it.

By the way, what's the cream colored amp sitting on top of it?

That's exactly the idea. To utilize all the possible uses.

And, to me, the results don't sound bad you know.

That amp you are asking is a DIY Dumble ODS clone, done with a Hammond Bassman (45W - 5E6) output transformer, 6L6 tubes, and some nice parts. It has a reverb as well. It was custom built for me by a friend of mine, and I am very happy with the results. It's not a kit amp or anything, but the basic starting point of us wasn't that far away from Brown Note's D'Lite 44...

Sending the sound like that is technically possible but will not sound natural. You should investigate a cab simulator plug in or try something like a sans amp for silent recording. While serviceable, silent recording just does not have the ambiance of the sound through a speaker.

Re: Marshall JTM30 used as a recording preamp!

The OP said in his first post that he used a cab sim plug-in and Carbon Copy for ambience.
