anyone have any expirience with those? specifically the mg 100 watt combo? Are they any good. lookin for the classic hard rock sound. GNR, ac dc ect.

Re: marshall mg series

theyre ok but i personnally dont like solidstate. For the price theyre great and be sure to check out the fander fm head too. Id suggest looking for a cheap used tube head also. A Laney AOR series (~$300-$600) or GH50/100 ($500+) would do what you want.

Re: marshall mg series

They sound pretty gross to me, even through a good cab they're nothing special. Lots of better stuff out there for the price. I'm a big fan of the crate palomino's myself.

Re: marshall mg series

thanks for the suggestions guys. just checkin out some options for a cheaper but good amp that will power in a band for leads, but not cost me an arm and a leg. tubes aren't a requirement.

Check out the cube 60. Ive had people use it for leads and works great all round and has some effects if youre into that stuff. They arnt all that expensive either

Re: marshall mg series

With the new Epiphone line of tube amps I think that solid state might be a thing of the past... they have prices that anyone can afford...
The thing is that even if those amps are not great... they are just better then any solid state...

Re: marshall mg series

I've owned a MG100DFX and a MG250DFX... I basically used them to amplify my Boss GT-8... they have good cleans and an AWESOME reverb (but it's not footswitchable though!! darn).. the MG250 DFX is 2 50 watt heads with a stereo effects loop (those 2 returns allowed me to actually USE all the stereo capabilities of the GT-8).. the downside is that the distortion is basically unusable.. it's so grainy and dull; the mids were horrible.. the distortion channel is only useful if you're looking for a scooped nu-metal tone (which it does pretty decently).. I liked the built-in effects a lot.. I don't know why but I happen to like the chorus and reverb from those amps more than any other effect box... well to sum it up the MG series amps are great if you have a pedalboard with maybe a TS9 or boss metal zone and other pre-amp type pedals. I basically used them as sound reinforcement.. for this utility I really suggest maybe a just a Crate Power Block and a good cab

Re: marshall mg series

My friend uses the 100, they are below average. I'd take an amp from the vox valvetronix series any day. I would suggest avoiding the MG series

Re: marshall mg series

They are not bad for solid state amps, but their sound is far from that of Marshall's coveted tube amps.

Re: marshall mg series

I own the 100 watt head, it sounds good to me ,for the price as well
I see alot of ppl on here swear by tubes and diss SS,
IMO those that diss SS are clueless, talent goes far beyond who has a better amp (Tube mongers) Some ppl cannot afford tube amps so SS
are a better choice , Your talent makes you sound good not your Tubes,
you could own the most expensive equipment and stll sound like sucketh
w/o talent, I say buy what you like and can afford , I have for over 30 yrs.

Re: marshall mg series

I don't get people saying that they're not bad for solid states...

They sound like a blow drier only fizzier. Roland, Randall, Vox, and many others completely blow them away, and at a better price point.

The MG series is for people who just want something with the marshall name on it.

IYO ,like I said Talent says it louder than your amp ever could.

I don't get the point of your post. So far people have been respectful of SS. They are judging the MG on sound alone and many of them seem to think that there are much better amps (solid state and tube) in the same price range that will outperform a Marshall MG.

While I agree that talent makes you, buying an inferior amp when there are many amps at the same price point that are superior just doesn't make sense.

VOX AD50VT, Peavey Windsor, Crate Palomino, Line 6 Flextone III are some amps you should look at. If you can, test as many amps as you can before you buy and buy what sounds best to YOU!:27:
