im about to buy one of these what youall think i have heard very very bad reviews but also i have heard good reviews , or what would you suggest i have $600 bucks whick half stack should i get , anyone have tried the mg100 let me know your experiences

Re: marshall mg100 half stack

i do not own the mg100 but i have used it many times at the studio during rehearsals and once for a gig and it is not as bad as some reviews describe it. Of course don't expect it to sound like an expensive tube amp.......

Re: marshall mg100 half stack

as far as budget solid state goes its fine, worth what they're asking for it

but if i was you i'd save a little more & go tube, it's hard, i know, but worth it

Re: marshall mg100 half stack

Any particular reason you need a halfstack? $600 could probably get you a pretty nice used combo...

i have a 30 watt marshall combo it sounds very good but i want something better with a better more pro sound you know i know im not getting a pro sound witha 600 dollar amp but it should sound better than my little combo tight ? and i want a half stack because i love the way a marshall half stack looks man is sick

Re: marshall mg100 half stack

Its a good amp, rugged, robust and with some pretty nice OD's, but its not a tube amp so you will not get that tube amp sound, if that bothers you then go for a tube amp, if not then i would recommend the MG.

Re: marshall mg100 half stack

A pro sound will come more from a tube amp than from a budget SS amp. And don't buy a halfstack just because of the look. IMO you should only buy a head/cab set up if the amp doesn't come in a combo or if you really need the extra wattage and 4x12 (which you normally don't; tons of touring artists play using combos).

Re: marshall mg100 half stack

I would just buy a Tech 21 60 or 120 amp and have a better sound than the Marshall or the tech 21 through the Marshall.

Re: marshall mg100 half stack

600? I see lot's of tube marshall's go for that price and maybe even lower 2nd hand.
You will only have to get a cab from somewhere and you're set. Sometimes you can even get a halfstack for that price.
IMHO only tube amps will get you the real pro sound you hear on cd's.

Save your money untill you see some good deal, then snatch it! That's how I got my Bogner, I'll never have to look for another amp again! (knock on wood: Unless it breaks down or gets stolen of course...)

btw. I gig with only a 2x12 cab and I can drown out the entire band with ease if I raise the volume! Tube amps are loud!!!

NO!

Look for these used amps--Peavey Ultra, Marshall JCM900, Laney GH series, Laney VH series, Laney AOR, Mesa DC series, Mesa Subway Rocket Series etc..

You *should* be able to find one of these tube amps for 600 or less and they will sound much better.

What style of music are you playing?

Because he would do layers of the same thing over each other during recording. Also he is an awesome player :D

That's because he had a good studio and sound tech at his disposal (sp?). I read he recorded different layers to get a fat sound on his albums.
Don't get me wrong, SS can sound good but IMHO tubes just sound better to my ears. Much better. Have you ever played/heard a good tube amp?

I never cared for Dime's tone but if you like that I'd look into Randall if I were you.

Re: marshall mg100 half stack

I had 6 month ago.
Goods: Overdrive one is very good and sound like Marshall. FDD effect is great.
Bads : Overdrive 2 very noisy. Reverb is crapy.
The problem with Solidstate is that the effect pedals do not work fine and do not sound as good as they should.
I got a tube amp. now and I ain't never coming back to solidstate.
I loved the look of the halfstack MG though.

Re: marshall mg100 half stack

Tech21 SansAmp GT-2 is EXACTLY what a Behringer GMX has. BTW, I was going to get a MG but I heard so many problems with it. If I where you, just get a used half stack from somewhere. Try pawn shops as a start.

Re: marshall mg100 half stack

that's bad advice

play tons of amps, every amp ever, anything you can get your hands on, try them with pedals, without them, every amp responds differently to pedals, and has different sounding gain

then pick out the one you like the most, and can afford via ebay or other used recourse

THEN look for it used

remember to try the amps at the volume you intend to use them. IMO if you're gigging, you try them at gigging volumes, they're more important than gigging ones, believe me, i learned that the hard way

let the store owners know you're serious about buying an amp, and tell them you need to try them at gigging volumes before you make a descision. I'd leave out the part where you intend to ebay it though. However, if you have $600, and the amp is $600, then buy it from the shop, it's a courtesy thing.

The fastest way for them to get you to buy an amp or leave, atleast with me, is for them to leave you alone, and let you do your thing

Re: marshall mg100 half stack

I would never pay $600 for any marshall product that says MG
Must companies have good stuff and crappy stuff, to signify crappy stuff, Marshall puts on MG on it. I have owned a couple MG amps.. if you can get it real cheap then it mite do the trick for ya, i would go lower than $600 though
Rock On :alcoholic

Re: marshall mg100 half stack

I'd prolly recommend against it too, even though I'm a Marshall fan. The MG has a smooth distortion considering it is SS, but overall the sound is thin. I went to buy one at GC on Sunday and just couldn't pull the trigger. The older Marshall SS (from the 80s) are better.

If you want to go SS, look into a Randall or the Peavey transtube amps. A Bandit II combo and matching 2x12 peavey cab will run you about the same $-wise as the MG stack if not cheaper. Or take a look at the XXL combo which I'm looking hard at right now too for it's versatility and features like 3 channels with different voicings on each, variable power selection and speaker damping. The distortion is very smooth for SS, prolly the best I've heard.

Or you could look into one of the Vox Valvetronix amps. Closed backs for a stack type sound, and it sounds more like a Marshall tube amp than the MG or Valvestates do by far. I would recommend the 60 watter though. Seems the lower end combos may have some reliability issues. My 50 watt died within a month as did a friends 30 watter in a few days.
