Marshall Micro Stack

This is just sheer curiousity. I have no intention of buying one. But I'm curious if anyone's heard one? Are they a cheap styling exercise, or do they actually produce usable tone? Sound decent?

Marshall Micro Stack

Thanks all.

Re: Marshall Micro Stack

Listen to Jack Blacks tone on School of Rock in the classroom scenes.

Not too much to poke a string at.

Re: Marshall Micro Stack

for what it is, its got great tone. also, ive allways thought it was cool that i could just put an amp on my belt and walk around, lets say town or a subway, or in a car, etc.

Re: Marshall Micro Stack

I dont know about the new ones... But the one from the 80's actually sound pretty good for a cheap solid state amp... My favorite thing to do was to plug it into a 1960b cab... amazingly it would push it ok... I have heard that Billy Gibbons used to dig em... But beyond rumour I have no info of it... At one point I was collecting these and had em in black, white, red, green, and silver... Now I only have the black and silver... the black was the very first amp I ever got... the silver i kept as its fits with the jubilee anniversary series..

Just to be clear, thats not the little one that fits in the palm of your hand . . . thats the one thats about 3 feet tall. (Two 10" inch speakers.) ;)

Re: Marshall Micro Stack

however, now im interested as well........

this sounds like the kind of thing i unfortuantely could get into and start colelcting in different colors!

Re: Marshall Micro Stack

Ive seen those mini Stacks, think was a 15watt mg series. Look fun but the novelty would wear off. Would look good in the living room:)

Re: Marshall Micro Stack

Yeah, I was thinking that it would fit nicely into a small music room or "bedroom" type playing situation. Looks nice, but I wouldn't want to sacrifice tone for styling. ;)

Still, one could build a copy. Using a nice little tube amp from Mission Amps or similar.

Re: Marshall Micro Stack

I was going to buy it when I first started playing, but I ended up getting the litle 15watt 1x10 combo practice amp and a metal zone. I wish I would of had the Mini stack instead hehe. I thought they sounded pretty good, a lot of ss stuff has been inpressing me alot lately. Very ironicly, after I got my first tube amp, all these ss half stacks that cost about half of what I paid sound so good. (peavey supreme xl, ibanez toneblaster, peavey xxx, ect.)

Re: Marshall Micro Stack

I have one of the old ones- the Lead 12- that I bought used for $100, I love it! I had been wanting one of the originals but they were discontinued, so when I was offered one used I grabbed it. It was a little worse for wear, one of it's speaker output jacks on the amp was hanging so it obviously had taken a tumble but the cord still stays in it and I've had no trouble at all.

I think the new ones have a few more watts and knobs than the older ones, mine says 12 watts on the back, sometimes I hook it to my 4x12 cab and it's really loud. I don't know about the new ones but the one I can get great tones out of mine with any guitar.

I see the prices are higher now though, $300 now when it was around $279 not that long ago. It's a little steep compared to what else you can get for that. I see the little Hiwatt stack is $320 at 20 watts, sheesh that's pricey too! I guess it is the price you pay for the name$$$$! I'd keep my ear to the ground for a used one if I wanted one of these.

Re: Marshall Micro Stack

I had one of the Lead 12 stacks as well. VERY cool red tolex one. Wish I had kept it or got the Jubilee series one.

AMAZING tone considering, and loud too for 12 watts. Billy Gibbons recorded "My Heads in Mississippi" with one. Goosed with a TS or SOD rreally made em warm/smooth.

I'd love to have another original one, and one of the new ones, even though they do not sound as good.

Marshalls older solid state stuff (pre Valvestate) ws pretty damn decent. I had a few SS amps from them, and IMO they were much nicer sounding than current SS or VS technology.

Re: Marshall Micro Stack

are those solid state?

i'd really like to see a tube 15 watter on top of two 1x12 boxes.. it would rule for bedroom playing and maybe even for small gigs hehe.

Re: Marshall Micro Stack

I played one of the older Lead 12 models. They sound great, don't know how the new ones based on the MG 15 compare though. There's a store here that has two of the Lead 12 versions for sale, one gray tolex and one red, both made in England. If I hadn't just picked up another amp, I'd grab one of them!

Re: Marshall Micro Stack

Terry Corso (Alien Ant Farm) keeps his actual amp back stage, and one of those micro stacks on stage, as a prop :D
