Marshall vs Ceriatone

I've been looking into getting a 1959SLP, but Marshall seems to have a higher price tag than I remember/think they're worth. I stumbled across the Ceriatone site and wanted opinions on them.

Re: Marshall vs Ceriatone

Ceriatone as a general rule makes a great amp for a good price but those HW 1959's are just killer amps...I won't say better or worse, truth is both are would be fine choices...

Re: Marshall vs Ceriatone

tgwif is spot on but also look at it this way, the Marshall you will get your money back on ebay and maybe then some.

Re: Marshall vs Ceriatone

How much does modification affect resale? I doubt I'd ever sell the thing, but you never know what happens in life. I can see a cascade gain mod happening though.

Re: Marshall vs Ceriatone

If your looking for a vintage Marshall clone? Metro amps is the place you should check out. I built one of George's 2204 boards... It's Killer

I hear nothing but good things about Metro Amps, but I'm trying to get away from spending that much cash on a head. Factor shipping on top of that and I might as well just buy the Marshall.

Re: Marshall vs Ceriatone

Nothing beats a Marshall except a Marshall. You can save some bucks on Ceriatone or spend more on Metro but you still dont got a Marshall in the end. I add to the previous poster who mentioned the 1959 HW. There is no better amp out there in the world.

This is a load of hooey. There are a lot of companies that have out-Marshalled Marshall.

Re: Marshall vs Ceriatone

I think the Metros can out Marshall the Marshall re-issues. George supplies the stuff and perhaps more importantly the knowlege to build a period correct hand wired plexi. By period correct I mean if you want an early 68 plexi instead of a mid 69 you can can do it, or maybe you want a 67, or one close in spec to the EVH amp, or some eras of the different Jimi and Cream amps. Maybe you want a JTM50 spec instead of a 69 JMP50, or a JTM45 with the original low filtering and certain transformer specs.

The HW is a great amp (albeit expensive) but it may not give the exact spec plexi you want or need without mods.

The PCB reissues make compromises, but that's not to say that they arn't good amps in there own right, just not exact recreations of the original articles. Of course being PCB makes them harder to mod.

Now only a Marshall can legitimately carry the Marshall name, and that means something as far as name recognition and re-sale value...ect...

Re: Marshall vs Ceriatone

Having had extensive experience with Marshalls Handwired 1959HW amp and cabs, I can say I sold my HW cabs, for various reasons, and had my amp modified by George Metropoulos immediately after I purchased it in 2005.
On Metro forum you can read all the gory details, but stock HW amps, there are quality control issues amongst other things, here are some pics of mine after George replaced the OT with his Dagnall clone,F&T capacitors, Sozo caps, Allen Bradley carbon comp resistors, Mullard reissue EL34's and Tung Sol 12AX7's.
