Marshall VS100 speaker change.. But which speaker?

Hey guys,

I have this Marshall VS100 combo. It sounds good at lower volumes, but it becomes thin and shrill at higher volumes. What speaker Will give me a darker tone?

I dislike G12T-75 as they had in 8080 valvestates. Sounded shrill as Well. So recommend me a good Celestion speaker please :-)

Thanks bros

avatarspeakers.com is running a good sale on Celestions.

You can get their Hellatone series (which is either a G12h30 or vintage 30) We convert it into a Hellatone by exercising the suspension for 15 hours so when you get it, it has a warmer tone on the very first note.

I am curious what kind of guitar and pedals are you running through it? I have the same and as do a couple of other forum bros and I have heard nothing but great things about the VS100. Mine is my gigging amp so it is definitely being played above bedroom levels.

I run a Epiphone Les Paul with a set of Pearly Gates and a Fender Strat through it. I use a Mooer Cruncher for some drive tones, and otherwise just the built in gain.

It does sound great at lower volumes, but I play with a drummer who smacks the drums like they are a disliked stepchild, so I have to keep the volume knob at about 6,5/7,5 out of 10, and it just gets quite scritchy and thin sounding in the highs. The bass and mids sound good, it just gets a bit too cold and piercing in the highs. I want something darker and creamier so to speak. The basic amp sounds great, and takes pedals like a charm, I am just looking for a better speaker. I dont know if yours has the G12T75, but mine has that Marshall branded speaker in it.

I was thinking about a G12K100.. I had a 4x12 with those in it, and I used them with my JCM800... Sounded great, but how well do they interact with the VS100? Do you have any suggestions? :)

Mwalluk -> Thanks man. I will look into them. Sounds interesting about the Hellatone treatment :)

Even if you don't go Hellatone route, they sell new celestions cheaper than anywhere. also keep an eye out on CL for used speakers, could land some for cheap. Or GC used section. They have a Carvin Legacy 412s for under $300. They usually come stock with vintage 30s. take the speakers out. Sell an empty 412 and the other speakers not used. Make money back

Only trouble is that it isn't feasible for me to get a 4x12 shipped to Denmark. Thanks for the suggestion though. I wish we had your gear prices over here :)

Any other suggestions? I dont know Much about the different Celestions, so any input is appreciated :)

Re: Marshall VS100 speaker change.. But which speaker?

g12k100.
nice and thick. Its fat bottom end complements open back combos and its smooth top end will complement the buzzy top end of the amp.
i had mine in a MKIII900 100 wattcombo and it was good.

Re: Marshall VS100 speaker change.. But which speaker?

You can never go wrong with Vintage 30's. Just my opinion.

Re: Marshall VS100 speaker change.. But which speaker?

I will check those out :) I had the G12K100s in a 4x12 once and I do remember them having a nice character. Very clean, but still a nice character. Of course the V30 is a classic speaker.

Thanks :)

Re: Marshall VS100 speaker change.. But which speaker?

While I do not disagree that a speaker change does a lot….

I'm feeling this is a knob-settings issue. Tell us the complete list of tonal settings. Not just the volume.

I think a bass/mid boost here, a treble tone cut there, and it ought to be great.

I play in a studio with that and a drummer with a monster set and a guitar player with a Blackstar. I'm thick as I need to be.

I have to agree with Ace. I have the stock Celestion "gold back", 8 Ohm, 120W speaker in mine and it sounds great, even with a loud band. One thing I do use to tame my tone is a 7 band EQ. I think I would start with my EQ settings if I were you. If the amp is not EQed correctly and you replace the speaker you will run into the same problems.

Re: Marshall VS100 speaker change.. But which speaker?

Yeah, try that ^^^. If you still just gotta change the speaker I'll second the K100 and add the Swamp Thang. I think they'd both be cool with that amp.
