Matching pickups: how to?

You guys are always talking about how well pickups match up with each other. How do you know? How do I match resistances up? I'm craving knowledge, enlighten me!

Re: Matching pickups: how to?

Lol, a few rules that you don't particularly have to follow.

The output at the bridge should be higher than the output in the neck.
Certain pickups set well with different woods, ie. Invader in alder.

But most of all, like Lew said, trial and error. If you live in America you can try all the SD pickups, because they offer a 21-day return policy!

Re: Matching pickups: how to?

well then, how much do resistances change from bridge to neck and middle, generally?

Re: Matching pickups: how to?

Sorry, I don't know much about resistance, cept for the notion that its a poor way of measuring output because of different magnet types. Somebody more knowledgable will come and help you, perhaps Lew again (who knows a sh*t load about this stuff)... I'm not really sure about it.

Re: Matching pickups: how to?

you also want the neck pickup to sound fatter and more rich than the bridge p-up...pretty much everything else has been covered already

Re: Matching pickups: how to?

I like to see at least a 1K diff between the bridge and neck in terms of DC Resistance when installing humbuckers of the same model.

For example, if I were putting a pair of the the same model humbuckers in a guitar and the neck model was 7.5K I'd expect 8.5K for the bridge...or more.

Re: Matching pickups: how to?

Wood certainly has the most to do with matching up pups. I use an unorthodox humbucker setwith very close DC resistances in my Heritage 150. I use a Jazz neck (7.7k) and a A2P bridge (8.4k) the A2P is closer to the strings than the jazz and so the A2P sounds MUCH louder. Let your ears be your guide don't get too hung up on the semantics.

On the other hand, a 59n and C5b are a real popular combo, but the C5 is twice the DC resistance of the 59. Yet, they pair together nicely. ;)

Re: Matching pickups: how to?

Yeah, I still don't get it. If I have an American strat, which I think is ??? wood, how would Hot Rails in bridge/middle and Screamin' Demon in neck work? What about JB Jr. in neck?

Re: Matching pickups: how to?

The JBjr is a pretty hot pup and Jannick Gers uses one in, but I'm guessing you already know that. I'd go with the screaming demon in the neck and JBjr in the middle and Hot Rails bridge. Two JBjr's would be fine too.

Re: Matching pickups: how to?

I think the EQ is also a matter. For example if you have a bridge pup that's trebly without strong bass and have a bassy neck pup it'll be hard to achieve a good sound for both of them. When you turn the bass of the amp up and cut the treble for the bridge pup and then switch to neck it'll be too bassy.

Re: Matching pickups: how to?

I'd start with one of the classic combos (jb/jazz, custom/59, etc...) and see how that goes.

Re: Matching pickups: how to?

So you guys know: I am keeping hot rails in bridge and middle, I already knew that. I am just questioning whether to keep Jan's JB Jr. in the neck or to go with possibly a lil '59 or lil screamin' demon. Which is the hottest? I am really considering the demon, cause the '59 isn't as hot, right?

Check the specs chart for strats at the Duncan tone chart website:

Looks about the same to me as far as output. It may cut through better depending on the way the mids are voiced so its probably a matter of taste. Check the Duncan clips to see which you'd prefer.

I'm not that dumb, man, to not look at that, but thanks for your help. All the tone chart is is them playing with no distortion and definitely not my style of music so I can't get a feel for what it actually sounds like.
