I have the OD-9, and when I bought it I compared it to the OD-808. IMO both pedals have about the same amount of gain available. The OD-808's tone was a bit "sweeter" and slightly smoother than the OD-9, although the OD-9 sounds nice, too. The on/off switch on the OD-9 must be pressed just right to operate it. (If you don't push it down far enough it won't turn on or off.) The switch on the OD-808 is very easy to operate, but IMO feels cheap and fragile. The OD-9 is true bypass, and the OD-808 is not.
I preferred the sound of the OD-808, but bought the OD-9 because of the better switch (IMO) and true bypass.
Note: I suck at describing sounds, so consider my opinion at your own risk!

I like the 808. If I didn't already own a Blues Driver I probably would have bought one but decided to spend $20 and mod my existing BD-2 instead. Now I like it better than the 808, it sounds a lot like a Rust Booster III now, which is a cool pedal in my opinion.

Maxon > Ibanez in every way, IMO. Much more natural sounding, with a sweeter midrange, as well as being more open and having more gain on tap.

none of them are perfect like the vintage ones...so forget that. if you want ts9 sound go with the maxon od9. if you want 808 sound go with the ts808 and not the maxon. why? the maxon od808 isn't actually an 808 it's based off the ts-10 circuit so it's like a step brother to the family of 9s and 808s and not quite the same. it's not bad, it's just not an actual 808 so i have no idea why they call it that.
IMO all of them need a few mods to shine...some more than others.

Actually, whats the real difference between a ts9 and a ts808. I know they use different chips, but is the difference really that noticable? I hear people say that the 808 is warmer and rounder, and the ts9 is clearer. Is that what you guys find?

The chip and 2 output resistor differences in the output section.After that it's purely component tolerence differences you hear between the pedals....The TS9 has a wider switch and is easier to press,the 808 is also about $70 more.I'd opt for the TS9 and have the changes made...
